OHIO SUPREME COURT JUDICIAL CANDIDATES FORUM (link to view forum: https://ohiodebatecommission.org/)
We are thrilled to share the Ohio Supreme Court Judicial Candidates Forum with you while there is still three weeks left until Election Day! Just click the image below to watch, hear from and learn about these four candidates.

This election year, the only statewide races are for two Ohio Supreme Court seats. With gratitude to the candidates, their teams, the moderators, and all the Ohio Debate Commission partners and supporters, we were able to conduct a forum moderated by Curtis Jackson, anchor at Spectrum News, and Karen Kasler, Ohio Public Radio and TV Statehouse News Bureau Chief. The candidates joined via Skype while the moderators were socially distanced in-studio. The four candidates are incumbent Justice of The Supreme Court of Ohio Sharon Kennedy and challenger, Judge John P. O'Donnell of the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas, and incumbent Justice Judi French of The Supreme Court of Ohio who faces challenger, Judge Jennifer Brunner of the Ohio Tenth District Court of Appeals.

WATCH THE FORUM -THEN GET ANALYSIS WITH THE CITY CLUB

On OCTOBER 19, meet us online for a virtual City Club forum, Balance in Play: The Future of the Supreme Court of Ohio featuring former Justices Yvette McGee Brown and Judith Ann Lanzinger, plus retired Judge Ronald Adrine.

Normally, judicial races don't receive much attention from the media or the public. However, the high-profile confirmation hearings of U.S. Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanagh, and the current nomination of Amy Coney Barrett to replace Ruth Bader Ginsberg highlight the critical role judges and the courts play in our democracy.

The Ohio Supreme Court race is considered by many to be a crucial statewide race on the Ohio ballot. How will the election affect Ohioans and the outcome of the cases facing the Court next year, including the redrawing of legislative maps? What did we learn from the ODC event about the candidates and how they might decide cases?

Help us combat low voter information around these elections by sharing these opportunities with your friends, family, and colleagues. Register here: https://www.cityclub.org/forums/2020/10/19/balance-in-play-the-future-of-the-supreme-court-of-ohio

Shout out to Dr. Melissa Weller, COMS Ph.D. '19, and COMS Associate Professor Dr. Angela Hosek for their recent publication in "Journal of Family Communication."

Melissa Rizzo Weller (The College of Wooster Communication Department) and Angela Nunziata Hosek (Ohio University School of Communication Studies) in our most recent issue of Journal of Family Communication present research about how birth mothers who participated in closed adoptions experience privacy turbulence today with these decisions made a long time ago.

These women come to regret their decisions that have limited how much ownership and control they ultimately have over private adoption-related information managed by the adoption agencies. The study is a great example of how cultural norms related to closed adoption have changed over time and how a group of birth mothers are motivated to try to create more openness in the management of private adoption-related information.

It’s great seeing your school stay connected while also making communications the key connecting point of your post. As a communications minor, I’ve been looking at how others in communications have been using their time. For me, I’ve been looking for independent cinema to analyze how interviewers cultivate a trusting relationship with the stars of their films. The platform that has helped me study this the best has been Film Festival Flix. The VOD platform has an abundance of films and host multiple virtual film festivals. For example, yesterday I watch the film Queen of Hearts: Audrey Flack and it was the perfect piece to watch for communications. The filmmaker had cultivated enough trust with Audrey Flack that her interviews would come off as extremely casual, even when it came to the more serious parts of the film. The best part is the festival films are still VOD so you can pause, rewind, and fast-forward without having to worry about missing a pivotal shot or moment. More films like this are expected to air during the Ashland Independent Film Festival, but it ends in 10 days. Make sure you take advantage of the opportunity and study the communications techniques in the movies. If there are any other movies from the Ashland Independent Film Festival you want to watch, let me know!!
As a communications major myself, I enjoy watching movies and picking out the techniques filmmakers are using onscreen. Recently, I watched a new independent sci-fi thriller called Empathy, Inc. and I felt that the film techniques really elevated the viewing experience altogether. The director chose to shoot characters from either high or low angles to show their power dynamics with each other, and the way their storylines played out went along perfectly with the way they were shown onscreen. I would definitely recommend! If anyone is interested, the VOD release is Sep. 24.
