The OHIO Summer Music Academy starts online next week! There's still time to register for our intensive programs in Band, Piano, Singing and Opera, and Strings, and work with our faculty to enrich your musical practice. From 9am-noon June 15-19, students will participate in group seminars covering practices and professions in the world of music and individual lessons with instrumental faculty.

It's not too late to register for the OHIO Summer Music Academy! We are excited to welcome distinguished harpist and harp teacher, Hee Jin Yoon, to our Academy faculty this summer. If you know harp students who are looking for a summer program, please invite them to do so!
Harpist, Hee Jin Yoon, is very active as a soloist, orchestra musician, chamber musician and teacher in Los Angeles & Orange County, California. She is co-founder of Flute and Harp Duo Dolce and plays many chamber concerts and coaches young students. Recently, she has formed Duo Gliss harp duo and focuses on expanding harp duo music. She is co-founder/director of LA Youth Harp Ensemble and LYHE Solo Harp Competition. She has performed at Redlands, CA for American Harp Society Conference 2018 and Logan, Utah for American Harp Society Summer Institute 2015.
Yoon was principal harpist of Lancaster Festival Orchestra from 2008 to 2015 and has played in the Cincinnati Ballet Orchestra, Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, Korean Symphony Orchestra and Kentucky Symphony Orchestra. Recently, she has played with many other orchestras in California. She can be heard on the orchestra CD of Lancaster Festival Orchestra “Ragomania- music of William Bolcom, Clare Fischer”
Yoon was born in Boston, Massachussets and she grew up in Seoul, Korea and received a Bachelor’s degree from the Seoul National University in harp performance. She came back to United States in 2004 and earned a Master of Music degree in 2006 from the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music as a student of Gillian Benet Sella of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. She also received a Performer Diploma from the Indiana University with the distinguished Professor, Susann McDonald. She won Concerto Competition at University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music in 2012. She received Honorable mention in the Victor Salvi Awards in 2007 and 3rd prize in the Busan MBC Broadcast Competition. In 2006, she was the finalist of the American Harp Society Anne Adams Harp Competition. As a soloist, she has performed Debussy’s Danse sacrée et profane with Lancaster Festival Orchestra, Mozart’s Concerto for Flute and Harp in C Major, K. 299 with CCM Philharmonic Orchestra, Handel’s Concerto Op.4 No.6 with the Korean Symphony Orchestra, Ravel’s Introduction and Allegro and Lutoslawski’s Concerto for Oboe and Harp with the CCM Concert Chamber Orchestra.
Ms. Yoon has passion for teaching and educational outreach program. She maintains her private teaching studio since 2007 and she was on harp instructor at God’s Bible College in Cincinnati from 2009-2012. In 2012, she moved to Los Angeles, CA with her husband and two dachshunds. She continues her career as a harpist to share her music with colleagues, audiences, composers and students.

Join us for the 2020 OHIO Summer Music Academy (virtual edition) June 15-19, 2020. Intensive tracks include piano, string, band, and voice/opera. In addition to private lessons, master classes, daily seminars and workshops, and a final, virtual concert, participants will enjoy a live-streamed performance of Bach's monumental Goldberg Variations on Wednesday, June 17th at 7 p.m. by OU artist-teacher of piano, Dr. Emely Phelps. "One of the most revered keyboard compositions of all time, the piece - an uninterrupted 80-minute elaboration of the famous opening Aria - serves as a reminder of the human capacity to strive for something far greater than oneself, and offers a spirited testament to life itself." While we are saddened to lose the opportunity to see everyone on campus this summer, we are currently in the process of transitioning our planned courses to online formats, and hope that you will choose to join us virtually to share your practice and learn new skills.

Join us for the 71st year of UNDER the ELMS!
June 6 Mitchell Spray, guest conductor.
Mitchell is an alumnus of Ohio University, and recently retired at the rank of Command Sergeant Major of The United States Army Band, “Pershing’s Own”, where he served as a trombonist and Drum Major. In observation of the anniversary of the D-Day invasion of Normandy, Mitch will be leading the band and audience through a military funeral music sequence. We’ll also feature music pertaining specifically to D-Day and the Greatest Generation.
June 13 "Sousa on the Green”
This concert will pay homage to the “March King”, John Philip Sousa, by presenting his marches as well as other numbers typical to a Sousa band concert at the turn of the twentieth century, including music by Grainger, Wagner, and Joplin.
June 20 Shelby Chipman, featured conductor & Ohio University Summer Music Camp Band Camp Participants
Dr. Chipman is Director of Bands at Florida A&M University. He’ll be joining us for a concert that will also feature the OHIO Summer Band Camp participants, who will be on campus all week.
June 27 "Music of the Night”: Music from stage and screen with John Schlabach and Josh Nightingale, trumpet.
Professor of Trumpet John Schlabach and one of his former graduate students, Joshua Nightingale, will both play features for solo trumpet that tie-in with the theme of music from the movies and musicals. We are also proud to announce a special collaboration with The Athena Cinema Downtown: after the concert, The Athena will show a FREE screening of the 1925 Lon Chaney silent film classic “The Phantom of the Opera”
July 4 “Celebrate America!”
Our annual Independence Day observation concert features favorites old and new of patriotic music, and always promises to be a special performance!
