Legislators explore critical issues at 2019 Environmental Policy Academy

The Legislative Environmental Policy Academy from the UGA Carl Vinson Institute of Government allows members of the Georgia General Assembly to learn more about key environmental issues on the coast – such as oyster aquaculture 🦪 flood protection 🌊 and saltwater intrusion – helping them make informed decisions about complicated environmental issues.

Walton County high school honored at Fanning Institute leadership conference - UGA Public Service and Outreach

Walnut Grove High School in Loganville, GA used the Youth Leadership in Action curriculum from the UGA Fanning Institute for Leadership to drastically improve their graduation rates – from 78.3% in 2013-14 to 93.6% in 2018-19!

The school was recently recognized for their outstanding efforts and success with the Innovations in Community Leadership Award during the 2020 Community Leadership Conference.

UGA receives $50,000 grant from AT&T to address flooding in Athens-Clarke County - UGA Public Service and Outreach

The University of Georgia is one of five southeastern institutions selected for AT&T's Climate Resiliency Community Challenge, a project designed to help communities in the US build a resistance to climate change.

Faculty and staff from UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant, the UGA Carl Vinson Institute of Government, and The University of Georgia College of Engineering will use a $50,000 grant from AT&T to assess potential future flooding issues for Athens-Clarke County.

Topping out ceremony at State Botanical Garden's Center for Art and Nature

The State Botanical Garden of Georgia at UGA recently held a special "topping out" ceremony at the construction site for the Center for Art and Nature.

Donors, University of Georgia administrators, garden staff, and members of the construction crew all signed the ceremonial white beam, which is part of an ancient construction tradition.

UGA partners on study to find sustainable methods of harvesting horseshoe crabs for the biomedical industry - UGA Public Service and Outreach

Pacemakers, prosthetic implants, antibiotics — in fact every medicine or medical device approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration depend on the horseshoe crab, whose unique, blue blood is used to test medicine and medical devices for bacteria.

UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant is working to help these critical creatures by farming them in their natural habitats on Jekyll Island, a strategy that aims to maintain the blood supply without depleting the population.
