How can you tell a shark’s age?

A new study by Benjamin Parrott has determined how to estimate the age of sharks by analyzing changes to individual animal’s DNA. Known as epigenetic clocks, these scientific age estimators focus on chemical alterations, known as DNA methylation, to measure wear and tear on the animal’s cells, providing a noninvasive, fast and accurate assessment of an animal’s age.

The predictive clock model has been successfully tested in dozens of other animals, but this study marks the first time it’s been used in sharks.

The tool can help shed new light on not just the biological evolution of shark populations but also the life cycle of other marine creatures with unknown aging data.

“Age structure is one of the most important things conservation biologists can measure,” said Parrott, associate professor of ecology. “If we could figure out how old wild sharks are, we could finally understand the age structure of their populations. That’s incredibly important for conservation of marine populations."

Amy Rosemond officially retired from Odum School of Ecology this summer after 30 years of research, teaching and administration. Throughout her career, she studied the effects of land use and climate change on the health of streams, uncovering important lessons about how excess nutrients and other pollutants harm natural ecosystems. But, she also had a huge impact on dozens of graduate student researchers – and visa versa. Read about Rosemond’s career and collaborative approach.

Through a career in teaching, research and administration, Rosemond pushed to expand our understanding of freshwater ecology.
