Face recognition manifests early in infancy, according to U. research

We always love hearing about creative infant research taking place at other universities. In this article, our UGA Infant Lab director Dr. Janet Frick discusses a study by scientists at Brown University showing that babies are constantly learning complex rules about their environment.

University researchers analyzed object and facial recognition in six- and ten-month-old infants for a study published in Developmental Science.

Update: thank you so much for such a huge response to this post! Attention Athens-area families! Do you have a child between the ages of 7 and 12? If so, please contact us about a study we are finishing up this month in collaboration with the UGA Vision Sciences Lab! Children receive a $20 Target or Walmart gift card at each visit (total of $40!) for participating in the study. The study involves two visits to the Psychology building (about 1.5-2 hours each) during which we test their cognitive and visual functioning. Weekend appointments and free parking next to the building are available!

We are especially interested in picky eaters, so if your child doesn't eat much in the way of fruit/veggies that's a bonus for this study ๐Ÿ˜Š

Eligibility criteria: Children must have been born "full term" (at least 37 weeks gestation) and not have any visual/sensory processing disorders (these would make the tasks too challenging to complete reliably).

If you are interested, please email [email protected] or call 706-542-5258.

Infant Brains Reveal How the Mind Gets Built | Quanta Magazine

Thought you all might enjoy reading about some interesting new research out of another university Infant Lab using brain imaging (a tool called fMRI) to understand the organization of infant brains. Hats off to the dedicated scientists and parents who collected this data!

Is the brain a blank slate, or is it wired from birth to understand the world?

Dr. Frick is attending The biennial meeting of the International Congress of Infant Studies this week, where developmental scientists from around the globe are gathering to talk about our work on brain development, attention, nutrition, and social interaction in young babies! One of the talks presented today was by colleagues of ours from Indiana University, showing that young babies are quite well tuned in to the engagement of their social partners during play time. Great example of lab research having practical implications!

Caregivers whose eyes wander during playtime -- due to distractions such as smartphones or other technology, for example -- may raise children with shorter attention spans, according to a new study.
