Ohio University Global Health Initiative

In our IHS 2210 Introduction to Global Health course we explore the basic concepts of Global Health including the importance of global organizations that direct and coordinate international health efforts.

The World Health Organization (WHO) was established over 70 years ago (April 7, 1948) to do just that within the United Nations system. Since that time, WHO has coordinated the efforts of governments and their partners including bi- and multilaterals, funds, foundations, civil society organizations and the private sector. The main areas of work are health systems; health through the life-course; noncommunicable and communicable diseases; preparedness; surveillance and response; and corporate services.

Some of the organizations achievements have included eradication of small pox, the near eradication of polio and a decline in the AIDS epidemic. In 2018, a new strategy and mission were approved to promote health, keep the world safe and serve the vulnerable. The triple billion targets set through this new strategy are:

• One billion more people benefiting from universal
health coverage;
• One billion more people better protected from health
emergencies; and
• One billion more people enjoying better health and
well-being.

During this current pandemic, the work of the World Health Organization gains even greater importance as they strive to keep global citizens healthy.
