This 1-year-old heifer arrived at the UGA Veterinary Teaching Hospital with a significant fracture in her left front leg. Her road to recovery required careful stabilization, ongoing monitoring, and a collaborative approach to care.

Our Large Animal Surgery team worked to stabilize the injury through splinting and casting, while our Field Services team provided continued follow-up evaluations as healing progressed. Together, these specialists helped guide the heifer’s recovery every step of the way.

Cases like this highlight the expertise and teamwork behind the care our large animal patients receive at the VTH, both in the hospital and in the field.

Next week, Coach Mark Richt returns to host the fourth annual Chick-fil-A® Dawg Bowl — and he wants YOU on the team! Together, we can take a big bite out of Parkinson’s and Crohn’s disease by giving to the Coach Mark Richt Neurological Diseases Research Fund at the University of Georgia.

Gifts will help fuel groundbreaking research at the UGA VetMed Isakson Center for Neurological Disease Research, where experts are working to uncover the connections between Parkinson’s disease and gut inflammatory diseases like Crohn’s.

On Oct. 3, Dr. Jackie Parr, board-certified veterinary nutritionist, was presented with the game ball by Ryan Gribble, chief revenue officer of Georgia Bulldogs Sports Marketing, and Hairy Dawg.

The presentation celebrated our ongoing partnership with The Farmer's Dog, which is fully funding a three-year residency in small animal nutrition at UGA VetMed.

Scientific discovery does not end when a study is published. But too often, promising breakthroughs fail to make the leap from the laboratory to the marketplace because researchers lack the partnerships and infrastructure needed to move their ideas forward.

Dr. Canaan Whitfield-Cargile (DVM 2006) wants to ensure UGA VetMed research doesn’t stop at publication. As the college’s first faculty innovation fellow, Whitfield-Cargile will spend the next two years serving as a liaison between the college and UGA’s Innovation District, helping researchers and clinicians turn promising ideas into real-world solutions.
