Kayla Floyd (DVM, 2028) spent her summer as a Georgia Veterinary Scholars Program student working in the Kyle Lab researching Naegleria fowleri, a brain-infecting amoeba that causes primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM).

Kayla worked alongside mentors Joe Dainis and Dr. Dennis Kyle to identify genetic and histological differences associated with PAM survival outcomes. She enjoyed seeing the overlap between human and animal medicine, the ability to gain hands-on research experience, and the mentorship she received along the way.

She also had the opportunity to present her research at the GVSP Research Day and the 2026 Veterinary Scholars Symposium at NC State University.

This year’s UGA New Faculty Tour took faculty through 53 counties and 87 cities, showcasing the incredible diversity of Georgia—from coastal ecosystems and one of the nation’s busiest ports to agricultural operations, rural communities, Metro Atlanta and the mountains of north Georgia.

The tour gives new faculty the opportunity to see Georgia firsthand, hear directly from community, business and civic leaders, and better understand the state and the people our university serves.

When Charlie was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive cancer, his family turned to the UGA Veterinary Teaching Hospital for care.

From surgery to recovery, Charlie’s family says they found more than exceptional medical expertise—they found a team that treated Charlie with compassion, kindness and genuine love every step of the way. They shared that at no point did Charlie ever feel like “just another case.” Instead, he became part of a team that celebrated his progress, worried about him when appropriate, and cared for him as though he truly mattered.

We’re grateful to Charlie’s family for sharing their experience and to our soft tissue surgery resident, Dr. Lauryn Cooper, fourth-year veterinary student Jess Ward and the entire veterinary team who helped this DGD keep smiling. 🐾

Student Spotlight: Christina Broski and Britney Skinner, DVM Class of 2028

Christina and Britney had the opportunity this summer to attend the Phoenix Landing Wellness Retreat in Asheville, NC, expanding their interest and knowledge in avian medicine.

The three-day retreat brought together veterinary students, specialty exotic veterinarians and bird owners for lectures, hands-on interactions with birds and opportunities to connect with others passionate about avian care.

Both students have an interest in exotic animal medicine and shared that the connections they made will help open doors to future externship opportunities.

The retreat provided a welcoming environment and a wealth of educational opportunities. Phoenix Landing generously sponsored their housing, meals and attendance, and the students also received a scholarship at the conclusion of the retreat.
