CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS! We are creating a zine about reproductive justice! If you are an artist, poet, or you are interested in this topic and want to write about it please submit to [email protected]!! Anyone and everyone is welcome to submit!

Some history on the RJ movement:
"Indigenous women, women of color, and trans* people have always fought for Reproductive Justice, but the term was invented in 1994. Right before attending the International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo, where the entire world agreed that the individual right to plan your own family must be central to global development, a group of black women gathered in Chicago in June of 1994. They recognized that the women’s rights movement, led by and representing middle class and wealthy white women, could not defend the needs of women of color and other marginalized women and trans* people. We needed to lead our own national movement to uplift the needs of the most marginalized women, families, and communities.

These women named themselves Women of African Descent for Reproductive Justice, and RJ was born. Rooted in the internationally-accepted human rights framework created by the United Nations, Reproductive Justice combines reproductive rights and social justice. The progenitors of RJ launched the movement by publishing a historic full-page statement with 800+ signatures in The Washington Post and Roll Call. Just three years later, in 1997, SisterSong was formed to create a national, multi-ethnic RJ movement." https://www.sistersong.net/reproductive-justice

Hillary Clinton’s Indefensible Stance on the Death Penalty

Check out this article by Liliana Segura, partially in response to the question that OIP exoneree Ricky Jackson posed to Hillary Clinton at the Ohio Democratic Presidential Town Hall a few weeks ago.

If any of these issues interest you, keep an eye out for updates on our OIP event this Friday and lecture by Segura happening next week!

Hillary Clinton’s position is both carefully crafted and totally confounding — and a red flag about her promises of criminal justice reform.

New Meeting Format!

Happy Monday, all

Staring after Spring break, we will be instituting a slightly different meeting format. During our meetings, which will still be Thursdays at 5 p.m. in the Center, we will start having dialogues about social and political issues for part of our meetings, probably the last 15-20 minutes (and people can stay to chat longer if they want).

Because our last meeting included a very productive discussion about the possibility of organizing an event around the current controversy surrounding Planned Parenthood and the bill in Ohio to stop state funding of that organization, that will be our first topic.

Over the next few weeks, we will be posting news articles and research about this topic, which y'all can choose to read or not read. People are encouraged to post their own research about this topic as well.

This will be a fact-centered, completely civil discussion. All are welcome to attend, even if you know nothing about this topic. Feel free to just come and listen and learn.

The next two weeks we will have our Easter Rising Centennial Film Series in RTEC 223 at 5 p.m. insted of having meetings. We hope everyone can attend that!

Our next meeting will be March 10, which coincidentally is our president's birthday and all she wants is for people to show up.

Have a great few weeks, everyone!

Kyle

Seeing as our theme this year is mass incarceration, we have sponsored or co-sponsored a number of events that tackle the complexities of these issues, including professor Hirschfield from Rutgers, whose talk discussed school discipline and the prison system. Similarly, there is a conference/event/workshop at Capital University next Wednesday (4-15) from 8a-12p that also appears to tackle the issues of school discipline and juvenile discipline/restorative justice. I have attached a poster of the free event that includes the link for the free registration if anyone is interested in attending. I think I will be going.
