A BIG shout out to our Student National Pharmaceutical Association (UGA SNPhA), who has captured a national championship! The team of Shannon Alexander (P4), Hanna Azimi (P3), and Tori Hunt (P3) represented UGA SNPhA in the National Prescription for Service competition, sponsored by Walmart and Sam’s Club. Competing against 54 other teams, UGA SNPhA WON FIRST PLACE! Their winning project, “Georgia Gives to Georgia,” targeted women subject to poverty, dependency and abuse in the local community. With the help of fellow students and faculty, the team hosted a health fair consisting of educational booths, HIV screenings, as well as blood pressure and blood glucose screenings, interactive activities, prizes, and more. Following the health fair, they hosted bimonthly interactive educational sessions and point of care screening sessions for the targeted women. The group won a $10,000 scholarship package, and the great news is that SNPhA plans to continue serving these women through the Georgia Gives to Georgia project! Special shout out to their advisor, Dr. Deborah Elder, as well as their fellow SNPhA members! The 2019 Student National Pharmaceutical Association's (SNPhA) annual meeting was held in Houston, TX last week, and the College of Pharmacy was well represented! There's LOTS of GREAT NEWS to report from this meeting - so much so, that it will come in social media installments! Our initial SNPhA story: Shannon Alexander (P4), who served as the UGA SNPhA chapter president for the 2018-2019 academic school year, was elected National Recording Secretary! To garner this national position, Shannon had to interview with the upcoming president as well as the Elections and Nominations Committee, and later speak on her platform and vision for growth to more than 600 general body members. Shannon was one of 10 J.B. Hills Chapter "President of the Year" finalists, too! Way to go, Shannon! Proud you're representing UGA on a national level! Stay tuned to learn about SNPhA's other accomplishments! #PharmDawgProud #pharmdawg

April 18th is National Transgender HIV Testing Day (NTHTD), an observance designed to recognize the importance of routine HIV testing, status awareness and continued focus on HIV prevention and treatment efforts among transgender people. The observance is organized by the Center of Excellence for Transgender Health.

In the United States, it is estimated that around 1.4 million adults identify as transgender. Transgender women are disproportionately affected by HIV and are at a higher risk of contracting HIV. According to current CDC estimates, around a quarter (22-28%) of transgender women are living with HIV. An estimated 56% of black transgender women were living with HIV—the highest percentage among all transgender women. There is a gap in research on HIV and transgender men; few studies have gathered HIV prevalence data for this population. Therefore, it is extremely important
to advocate for transgender research, reduce stigma and promote HIV testing.

Take control, get tested and learn your status.

Today’s young people are the first generation who have never known a world without HIV and AIDS. In the United States, one in four new HIV infections are among youth ages 13 to 24. Every month 1,000 young people are infected with HIV and over 76,400 young people are currently living with HIV across the country. While there has been much talk about an AIDS-Free Generation, we know that is not possible without our nation’s youth. Young people and their allies are determined to end this epidemic once and for all and this day is a way to acknowledge the great work young people are already engaging in to do so.

HIV is a public health issue among American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN), who represent
about 1.3% of the U.S. population. Overall, diagnosed HIV infections among AI/AN are proportional to their population size. Compared with other racial/ethnic groups, AI/AN ranked fourth in rates of HIV diagnoses in 2016, with a lower rate than blacks/African
Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, and people reporting multiple races, but a higher rate than Native Hawaiians/Other Pacific Islanders, Asians, and whites.

Today, March 10th is National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day!

In 2017, women made up 19% of diagnoses within the United States. Moreover, black/African American and Hispanic/Latina women continue to be disproportionally at risk for HIV. Let’s continue to decrease these numbers by using these resources to learn more about HIV and spreading the word!

Today, March 10th is National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day!

The 2019 National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is, “HIV Prevention Starts With Me”

We've made tremendous progress against HIV and AIDS in the U.S., but women remain vulnerable to infection — especially black or African-American and Hispanic women. Any woman who has sex can get HIV, regardless of race, ethnicity, age, or sexual orientation. Today, nearly 1 million people in the U.S. are diagnosed with HIV, and nearly 1 in 4 of them are women.
