Greetings, Brothers—

I hope this post finds you and your family well and in good health. There are not many things in the world that could get me to subject myself to catching more crap for sending out PGD emails, but here we are. Bill Hardell is one of THE main reasons our chapter is recognized as one of the PREMIERE Phi Gamma Delta Chapters in the entire Fraternity. He helped create and build the foundation that has led us to 15 Cheney Cup Awards in just over 50 years. The Hardell Family’s legacy in Kappa Deuteron is unmatched, and that’s powerful statement as we have had so many families that have contributed to our long term success. I suspect every single person reading this post knows Robert Hardell (‘86) as either our Recording Secretary, as a distinguished and committed graduate brother, or as the father to two more outstanding contributing brothers-Rob (‘18) and Davis (’21), a recent Chapter President. Robert is my pledge brother. Mr. Hardell was one of the most influential graduate brothers so many of us met when we first pledged the fraternity.

I am asking YOU for your help-today.

The Award:

The Board of Chapter Advisors recently established the William R. Hardell Distinguished Service Award which will be given annually at the Pig Dinner to an undergraduate who represents the characteristics of service and dedication to our fraternity that Bill demonstrated on a daily basis. The award includes $500 which will be donated to an Athens area non profit, chosen by the award recipient. To fully fund this award in perpetuity, a goal of $25,000 must be achieved. We have already made good progress towards this goal. Now we are opening to up broadly. I am asking you to make a contribution TODAY at the link below. Please consider a donation in the amount of $100, $250, $500 or ANY amount you can do. I am asking the younger graduate brothers who were in school with Rob or Davis to contribute $25-$50.

How to contribute:

Brothers may make a tax-deductible gift toward the William Hardell Fund by gifting to the Phi Gamma Delta Educational Foundation. Gifts may be made securely on-line at: https://www.phigam.org/MakeAGift

In the “comments” box on the giving page, type “William Hardell Fund”. You will receive a thank you letter from the Foundation indicating your gift is restricted to the William Hardell Fund. If you 1) know what a check is and 2) would like to contribute by check, email me back and I will share directions. For gifts of stock, please contact Ben Robinson at Fraternity HQ at 859-255-1848 x133. Gifts from charitable gift funds or gifts from your IRA may need our tax ID number: 52-6036185

Early Kappa Deuteron:

There were seven undergraduates in the original colony. William (Bill) R. Hardell, Sr., who was initiated into our fraternity by the Xi Deuteron Chapter at Case Western University in 1949. He had moved to Athens and answered the call when the international fraternity asked for local graduates to come together to advise the new chapter. Bill volunteered, was appointed the first Purple Legionnaire, and became everything a chapter needs. He found a fraternity house for us at 1055 Prince Avenue. He prepared the building for occupancy. He and his wife, Lucy, were there for rush and found a housemother to run the kitchen for the members' meals. He attended colony meetings carefully observing the prescribed colony rituals.

On this foundation, the chapter prospered and its excellence has been recognized 15 times with the Chaney Cup given to the best chapter in the international fraternity.

Please act today and help honor, in memoriam, William (Bill) R. Hardell and the immense legacy he has left within the walls of Kappa Deuteron.

Thank you in advance. I know we will do this!

Fraternally,
Ira

Brothers--

Thank you! Thank you for making the time! Thank you for making a weekend of it! Thank you for engaging! Thank you for traveling to Athens! Thank you...

I feel it is a fair statement to say that PD50 was a rousing success! Nearly 570 attendees from Kappa Deuteron and around the country. This was a group effort of grads, undergrads and Gold Owl related grads.

I am so glad that people had the chance to attend the Gold Owl (Alpha) ceremony Friday night (those initiated 50 years ago), the lunch with nearly 350 Brothers, the Ad Astra Service (around 100 brothers) and PD 50. This was a once in a lifetime "reunion".

As I have said all along, the truest measure of success for PD50 wasn't PD50-it will be PD51-PD100. It will also be whether or not guys reconnect for lunch, dinner, family trips, UGA tailgates and game trips, future Pig Dinners, etc. over the next year and next decade. If THAT happens, it was successful.

Chairing this event has been a personal life highlight event. I loved it, and while I would never ever consider doing it again, I am grateful to have had the opportunity 😊. To the many I have thanked publicly, thank you one final time.

I am including the link to the Red & Black article that was published regarding PD50: https://www.redandblack.com/uganews/phi-gamma-delta-reunites-fraternity-alumni-at-annual-pig-dinner/article_30268506-3176-11e8-90b5-8b6b77f28465.html

If you are one of the few who waited too long to register, find a way to reengage today. Text a brother. Call a pledge brother. Email them. They WANT to hear from you.

Thank you for the entire experience.

We are rapidly getting to our first milestone of 100 Brothers PAID for PD50. Be one of the first 100 (there is no reward other than pride).

• Friday Night’s Gold Owl Dinner & Ceremony is an event for those who have been initiated in the Fraternity for 50 years (i.e. 1968 or before). If you are a Gold Owl or you know someone who is, please email me or Bill Bracewell to make sure they are invited. Ira Bershad [email protected] or Bill Bracewell [email protected]. There is an ADDITIONAL sign up for Gold Owls on the same link. I could not charge $0.00 via PayPal, so please register and pay the $1 cost.

• When you go to register and pay, please be sure you pick a t-shirt size. Also, please be sure to include your email address and cell phone where asked.

• If you cannot attend, but would like to donate to the event’s costs, there is an option. If you are attending, but can still donate to the event’s costs, you can go back and do that from the same link.

• The $100 registration fee is for Brothers who graduated from the 1960 through 2011.

• The $50 registration fee is a break for Brothers who graduated / will graduate from 2012 and after. If you are one of these Brothers, but would like to pay the higher fee, please feel free and thank you.

• Your registration fee INCLUDES: Friday Gold Own Dinner (for those initiated 50 years+ only), Saturday Lunch at the House, PD50 t-shirt, 50th Pig Dinner event and meal attendance, Free taxi service between the House and The Classic Center Saturday night.

• Email, text or call a pledge brother right now, as you read this. Make sure he is planning to attend. We are shooting for 500 attendees-a record attendance for our Chapter.

Brothers---

I am happy to announce that I am once again moving forward as the Chairman for the 50th Pig Dinner next March. I am very happy about this, and the only person that is happier is Jeff “GE” Brown. Thank you to Jeff for stepping up when called upon.

I have been trying to finalize the last step of “going live” – the online payment process. We are now ready!

ALL traffic will go through one website for PD50. While I will update you by email, text (coming soon), Facebook, etc., the official PD50 website can be found at https://www.ugafiji.com/50th-pig-dinner2018/ moving forward.

Please go to this page NOW and register. It has the ONLINE PAYMENT info for both Pig Dinner (Saturday 3/24/18) and The Gold Owl Ceremony and Dinner (Friday 3/23/18). It has the agenda and it also has the links to our Hotel Room blocks negotiated by Mike Kitchens.

In the next few weeks, you will also receive a formal invitation from a service called Paperless Post. We used that last year.

For now, we need to get some funds in the bank account to cover deposits and advance expenses. I WOULD LIKE TO GET 100 BROTHERS TO REGISTER/PAY over the next two weeks. This is literally a
5-minute process. If you have a PayPal account, you pay via PayPal. if you do not, you can use any major credit card from the same link.

Please don’t delay. The sooner we can show a strong early showing, the sooner we can use that to market the event to our brothers who have not been attending as frequently. Please be one of the first hundred.

Some items to note:

• You have 9 months from today, please let the family know this weekend is booked.

We are shooting for 500 attendees

• If you would like to volunteer to help in any way with tracking down Brothers and their contact info, please contact me directly.

• If you get this or a version of this from another email list, and that bothers you, just delete it. No need to let anyone know it bothered you 😊.

Please enjoy the PD50 promotional videos from 2016 and 2017 https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmXpiYheAvtEcHLb5-bbczg

There is plenty more info to come and this promises to be the BEST ATTENDED PIG DINNER IN OUR HISTORY. Please forward this to ANY BROTHER you are currently in contact with from our Chapter.
