Men with Small Heads by Lori Laitman

Dear students,
We are excited to get back to work and hear some excellent singing in a few weeks! And we have some really incredible masterclasses and events planned for this fall.

For a little inspiration on how we can continue to make music and sing, please check out this recording of Wes Taliani and Wendy Blackwood performing Men With Small Heads by Lori Laitman. This is one of the videos Wes submitted as a semi-finalist in the National NATS Student Auditions this summer, and here is what he has to say about it:

"Entering into a virtual competition was a first, and while it was disappointing not to have the chance to travel in-person to an event, it honestly was a lot of fun to figure out how to put together the best recording I could manage. At first, I had trouble hearing the accompaniment in the room, and so I decided to play it through earbuds and sing along with it. I had the ability to later layer the accompaniment file over the video file and so you’re hearing both the audio from my microphone and the accompaniment file playing simultaneously. It took some special software and a lot of patience to do that since I’m not an editing expert, but it was a fun challenge. There are other ways I could have done it but I wanted to experiment, and am generally pretty happy with how it turned out! As much as I love working with other musicians, I found it really important to focus on what I could do to creatively address these challenges and problems so that I could keep feeling motivated and excited about singing."

"One of my most cherished memories of being at OU is when I was asked to perform with The United States Army Field Band and Soldiers Chorus when they came to OU. A group of selected students, including myself, sang/played one song with them and it was such an honor to be performing with them. It’s definitely something that I’ll never forget!"

"So many memories stand out to me from my time at Ohio University. I will never forget all of the incredible experiences I had with the Marching 110, from performing at the Bengals and Browns games to marching in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. I have made so many amazing friends and have had exceptional instructors these past four years. A special thanks to the voice faculty and my two voice teachers, Dr. Kelly Burns and Dr. Daniel Stein - I have learned so much from you all!"

Congratulations Wes Taliani!
Wes is graduating with an MM in Voice Performance.

"After graduation plans: I really love Columbus and so I’m looking for opportunities there to work. Otherwise, I’m looking forward to preparing for the next audition season and new opportunities, and getting back into studying piano.
Cherished memory: It has been incredible to work with everyone, students and teachers, while at OU. I’ve met some wonderful people here and have always felt like a valuable part of this community in no small part because of the faculty and their encouragement. Specifically, performing in Magic Flute last year was my first major opera experience and I will carry that with me for life. Thank you so much to everyone who made these three years some of the best!"

Congratulations Ali Taliani!
Ali is graduating with an MM in Vocal Performance/Pedagogy 2019, and an MM in Music History and Literature 2020!
Ali and Wes plan to move to Columbus and find jobs in the arts world!
Cherished Memory: Two memories stand out from my time at OU; my graduate recital last April, and our performance of Magic Flute last spring! My recital was a program of women composers and poets that I had carefully picked out and was really proud of. And performing Magic Flute with my friends and colleagues was such a magical experience—nothing beats the thrill of performing on stage with an orchestra!
