Ohio University's Science Cafe series continues its spring lineup with Dustin Grooms, Steven Pfeiffer, and Janet Simon, faculty members in Applied Health Sciences and Wellness, to discuss, “The Brain, Body, and Biomechanics of Injury Recovery” on March 17 at 5 p.m.

This cafe will give an immersive experience from the point of view of an orthopedic patient recovering from injury. Grooms, Pfeiffer and Simon will explore how common sports-related orthopedic injuries occur and what a typical patient will experience over the course of their recovery.

Join Grooms, Pfeiffer and Simon, as take the audience into their laboratories to explore the types of advanced and personalized analyses they employ in their research labs–giving an overview of how human movement is quantified, cartilage responds after exercise and damage, and the brain controls movement after injury. The researchers will also discuss how they use neuroplasticity–the brain’s ability to adapt, master new skills and recover from a traumatic injury–to augment patient recovery.

The series is supported by the Ohio University Research Division and Ohio University Chapter of Sigma Xi.

Ohio University Global Health Initiative

"Hello, my name is Amogelang Dijeng. I am a final year grad student in African Studies, majoring in African Economic Development. I chose the Global Health Certificate after having enrolled in the Fundamentals of Global Health class. I enjoyed the content of the class and found that I had a lot of experience and knowledge that gave me an advantage in the class. So when I found out that I could enroll in a certificate program on Global Health I was more than excited to enroll. My favorite class has been the Fundamentals of Global Health class. This certificate program applies to my program because they particularly look at the factors that impact the lives of marginalized communities that are not often discussed in academic spheres. The Global Health Certificate is a valuable program because it serves as a good introduction to global topics and I believe all students interested in international studies should consider this program as a way to broaden their horizons." Congratulations

Congratulations to Dr. Laura W. Black who was recently named Stocker Professor of Interpersonal Communication! Dr. Black was appointed to the endowed professorship for her extensive and ongoing work around dialogue, community, and communicating across difference.

Dr. Black is conducting two community-engaged research projects through the Stocker Professorship. First, she is partnering with Athens High School to help design and teach a class on “Race, Equity, and Anti-racism" as part of a larger project with Athens City School District to improve equity and inclusion at the schools. Second, she is working with the non-profit organization Essential Partners to study online dialogues of frontline healthcare workers dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meet Courtney! She is the biological sciences developmental representative for 2020-2021. Courtney is a second year biology PhD student from Chico, California! She joined GSS to “be a part of the greater campus community and make a positive impact on my fellow graduates lives, especially those in healthcare!” The word she would use to describe 2020 is inconceivable. Thanks for joining GSS, Courtney!
