Presidential Campaign TV Ad Spending Crosses $1 Billion Mark In Key States

"More than $1 billion has now been spent on TV ads for the 2020 presidential election in just 13 states, an NPR analysis of the latest ad spending data from the tracking firm Advertising Analytics finds."

Almost $900 million of that money has been spent in just six states — Florida, Pennsylvania, Michigan, North Carolina, Wisconsin and Arizona. Biden has a big spending advantage in those states.

With election day just around the corner, Dr. Laeeq Khan, Director of the Social Media Analytics Research Team (SMART) Lab, decided to challenge his students to get engaged-- through analytics, that is.

Students registered in Dr. Laeeq Khan’s Social Media Analytics course analyzed data stemming from social media conversations sparked by the U.S. 2020 presidential debates.

This analysis gives students in the Scripps College of Communication the opportunity to gain real world experience and insight on how to understand the power of data.

“I learned how to utilize analytic tools, such as Netlytic, to better visualize data and see the bigger picture. To be able to know how to work with data and understand information flows, is an essential part of being able to work with social media, so these skills will definitely help me in the future.”
- Yana Durado, Social Media Analytics Student

The election analytics challenge was also held in 2016, making it a SMART Lab tradition.

During phase one of Ohio University’s reopening, the once bustling hallways are still mostly vacant, with the occasional student and faculty making way to an office or study area. As the University remained mostly closed for August and September, classes were held online, posing new challenges for both students and professors. Many of media classes are lab based, requiring demo’s and equipment only accessible in Schoonover. Access to high speed internet also creates connectivity issues. Some of these problems will hopefully be remedied during the partial reopening in phase two; yet, the responsible management of the student body during a pandemic remains a priority. Network visualizations are at once beautiful and informative, helping us make sense of the macro through micro patterns in the vast connected ecosystems that define the world around us. Yet, all visualizations are equally data art and data science, constructing rather than reflecting reality.
