African Christianity Practically Applied in the Urban American Context
Dean KJ Teaching: Purpose — How to Understand It Biblically
Introduced through the Dream by Urban Success University Founder Yolanda Denise King
This teaching begins where Urban Success University Founder Yolanda Denise King left us: with the Dream.
But Dean KJ takes the conversation one step deeper.
What is the Dream biblically?
What is purpose?
Where does purpose come from?
How do you know when something is God's assignment for your life rather than simply something you want?
How do grace, faith, hope, vision, the Word of God and purpose connect?
This is African Christianity practically applied within the urban American experience—studying Scripture seriously while refusing to separate biblical truth from the culture, language, history, struggle and everyday reality of the people being taught.
The lesson moves from Dream to Purpose.
The Dream is presented as a glimpse beyond present circumstances—a picture of something that does not yet visibly exist.
Purpose is the divine assignment connected to that picture.
The Word becomes the seed.
Grace becomes the divine activity empowering the assignment.
Faith receives what cannot yet be physically seen.
Hope holds the image.
Vision allows you to see internally what has not yet appeared externally.
And your life becomes the ground in which that divine seed must be cultivated until what was once invisible becomes visible.
This is not merely positive thinking.
It is not simply motivational speaking.
It is not prosperity theology telling people that believing hard enough automatically produces whatever they desire.
It is a biblical exploration of how a person learns to discern, receive, develop and walk out the purpose of God while living in circumstances that may initially provide little visible evidence that the vision can become reality.
Dean KJ teaches Scripture through the language of the community—moving between Bible, theology, African-centered understanding, Black preaching tradition, everyday urban language, entrepreneurship, motherhood, architecture, agriculture and lived experience.
The ultrasound becomes theology.
The blueprint becomes theology.
The seed becomes theology.
The struggle becomes theology.
The neighborhood becomes the classroom.
And the Bible becomes something that can be understood, interrogated and practically applied rather than simply quoted.
Yolanda introduces the Dream:
“I rise. You rise. Together, we will rise.”
Dean KJ then teaches the next question:
What has God placed inside of you that you are responsible for bringing into the world?
That is the purpose conversation.
And that is the Urban Success University classroom.
