A new paper by Emory's Dr. Weirong Guo and Dr. Wendy Zhou is online in Cultural Sociology! The study looks at how Chinese youth think and feel about Hong Kong and Taiwan.

In addition to celebrating this great work, we celebrate the spirit of the scholars.

As Dr. Guo writes, "One thing I took away from writing it is simply how enjoyable it is to work on something you genuinely know well and care about. We never felt the need to justify why China, or why this topic, matters. We simply thought the questions themselves were important, and we were fortunate to have an editor who fully supported the project.

We find that young people’s views on sovereignty cannot be reduced to simply supporting or opposing “unification.” Instead, they express a range of emotional orientations, and these emotions are closely tied to how they imagine China’s future and what they hope the country might become."

In 1977, the ASA Section on Medical Sociology established an award for distinguished service to the field. The Reeder Award recognizes a scholar whose body of work displays an extended trajectory of productivity in contributing to theory and research in medical sociology. It also acknowledges teaching, mentoring, training, and service to the field.

Congratulations to Dr. Ellen Idler, the 2027 recipient of the Leo G. Reeder Award for Distinguished Contribution to Medical Sociology!

🎉 Congratulations to Emory Sociology graduate student Lingxiao Chen, whose paper, “Performing Nationalism: Celebrity Politics and Audience Boundary Work under Authoritarianism,” received outstanding recognition at this year’s American Sociological Association meeting!

Lingxiao won two ASA section awards: the Sociology of Culture Section’s Richard A. Peterson Award for Best Student Paper and the Asia and Asian American Section Graduate Student Paper Award. The paper was also named runner-up for the Social Psychology Section Graduate Student Paper Award.
