EAS September Student of the Month! 💚

Katherine Poch is a fourth-year Environmental Science major with a minor in Global Development and an interest in climate change. She recently received the Rutt Bridges Award for her work conducting exploratory data analysis on Southern Ocean eddy properties in the Georgia Tech Oceanography (GATO) Laboratory led by Dr. Lily Dove. This summer, she participated in the Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP) with the Ohio State University Graduate School where she worked with Dr. Jay Martin and Dr. Mahesh Tapas to present her analysis of nutrient concentrations from agricultural monitoring sites in Northwestern Ohio and development of a field-scale SWAT+ watershed model. Katherine has also been awarded the Reducetarian Fellowship and will be serving as a student volunteer for the National Weather Service during the Fall semester.

Starting off the first of our club spotlight series with the GT Beekeeping Club! 🍯🐝

Based on the Kendeda rooftop, GT Beekeeping Club currently maintains 3 hives and hosts 1–2 hive inspections each week, starting the week of September 7th!

Beyond hive inspections, the club also hosts honey harvests and other bee- and honey-related events. No experience is needed, and all suits and supplies are provided during inspections!

Behind the forecast with Sydney!☀️⛅️

This summer Sydney shadowed meteorologist Dylan Lusk at the National Weather Service in Peachtree City. She learned how a National Weather Service oftice manages short and long-range forecasting, severe weather operations, and aviation forecasts (TAFs). The visit provided an opportunity to learn about the technology behind forecast communication, including how google script helps automate displays on the office’s official website. With only a few meteorologists working in the office at a time, communication, flexibility, and teamwork are essential, especially when responsibilities can change quickly during severe weather events.

In addition she learned first hand how to perform a balloon launch. These balloon’s are launched twice daily and can rise approximately 115,000 feet into the stratosphere. Its lightweight equipment collects atmospheric data, including temperature and relative humidity. Such experiences are beneficial to understand how satellite data and other observations work hand in hand to predict accurate forecasts.

Research Spotlight with Claire! 🔬🌿

Claire has spent this past summer conducting boreal peatland research in Fairbanks, Alaska, as a part of Dr. Jennifer Bowen’s Aquatic Biogeochemistry research group. Through weekly greenhouse gas monitoring and water sample collection at the Bonanza Creek Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) peatland sites, the team aims to better understand how carbon is moving through this unique region and the environmental factors that control it. Peatlands are significant long-term carbon stores, yet are highly sensitive to climate change, so monitoring these sites can provide valuable information about how a warming climate will impact the region’s ability to sequester carbon. Other tasks Claire has completed while in Alaska include running experiments to determine the impacts of microbes and sunlight on peatland water chemistry, porewater sampling, soil coring, and vegetation surveying.

The first picture shows Claire at Beta, a bog, where she is measuring environmental factors such as water table depth, soil temperature, and permafrost depth. The second photo is of her field crew at Alpha, a flooded fen, in July. The third photo shows the soil gas flux chamber used at Beta, which tracks the rate that carbon dioxide and methane move between the plants and soil to the atmosphere. The fourth photo shows the team walking into Alpha in May, when the site was very flooded. The fifth photo shows Claire helping another field team collect soil samples to study long-term impacts of forest fires.

Research Spotlight with Elle! 🔬🦎

This summer Elle participated in field work with the Anolis research lab of Dr. James Stroud in Miami, Florida. She helped collect data on Anolis lizards as part of ongoing research exploring their ecology and evolution.

Elle assisted with scanning toe pads to measure toe pad width and toe length, as well as x-raying lizards to measure skeletal structures and identify internal features, including eggs and consumed snail shells. She also collected additional data for an ongoing cold tolerance study, helping researchers better understand how Anolis lizards adapt to changing environments.

This work contributes to a larger understanding of how species evolve and respond to environmental challenges over time.

The first picture shows Elle holding a yellow rat snake in the lab space where she conducted her research. The second slide features an Anolis hatchling that Elle discovered during a night survey, with a tape measure included for scale to show just how small it was. The third picture shows an anole positioned on a scanner to capture detailed toe pad images, including an individual with a regenerated tail growing from the original tail. Finally, the fourth picture captures two male anoles during a fight, showcasing the natural behaviors researchers observe while studying these species.

EAS August Student of the Month! 💚

Kate Williams is an Environmental Science major with a minor in Public Policy, graduating in December 2026. She is passionate about sustainable transportation, climate policy and urban sustainability. This summer, she is interning with Clean Cities Georgia, where she supports the transition to alternative fuels through stakeholder engagement, transportation policy, grant implementation and the development of outreach materials and program metrics. Kate also serves as the Political Outreach Officer for Georgia Tech College Democrats. She has served as a Sustainability Ambassador for both the City of Atlanta and Georgia Tech's Scheller College of Business, promoting sustainability initiatives and community engagement. She has also worked as a student consultant with EPIC Intentions on community impact projects for nonprofit organizations and was a Marketing Coordinator for Jexim, a startup developing sustainable pavement materials. After graduation, Kate hopes to pursue a career in the clean energy sector. Outside of school, she enjoys hiking, traveling, cooking and exploring new restaurants.
