Throughout 2026, ChBE@GT is celebrating its 125th anniversary. Janice Whatley, academic program manager II for ChBE's Graduate Program, has worked in the school since 1992 (she joined Georgia Tech in 1984) and has played an instrumental role in the program's evolution.

Refining crude oil into gasoline and jet fuel is one of the most energy-intensive industrial processes on earth, and it hasn't changed much in a century. Georgia Tech's Ryan Lively and KAIST's Dong-Yeun Koh are part of an international team that may have found a better way.

Published in Nature, their research shows that a common, inexpensive membrane material can selectively separate crude oil into lighter and heavier fractions, something researchers didn't expect it to do. The findings suggest that adding a membrane step before conventional distillation could significantly reduce the energy, water, and carbon footprint of petroleum refining. b.gatech.edu/3R4vqc5

Congrats to John Blazeck, associate professor in Georgia Tech's School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, who has won a 2026 Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award from the National Science Foundation (NSF).

The CAREER Award is the NSF’s most prestigious award in support of junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars.

Blazeck will receive $647,941 over five years for “Creating and evolving antibodies from scratch in yeast.”

Congrats to Kayla Carneal (ChBE B.S. 2026), one of five students selected as Reflection Speakers for Georgia Tech Commencement, who is heading back to NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, after graduation.

She’s joining the Environmental Controls and Life Support Systems team, which focuses on technologies that help keep astronauts alive during missions and aboard the International Space Station.

NASA is familiar territory for Kayla. During her undergraduate studies, she completed multiple NASA co-op rotations involving projects related to Artemis missions, oxygen generation systems, nuclear thermal propulsion, lunar regolith research, and more.

She also interned with Tesla, conducted undergraduate research, and held leadership roles in Engineers Without Borders and Peer Mentoring.

Her advice to future students: “Be open-minded! My path and career goals changed drastically during my time here.”

Congrats to new Ph.D. graduate Henry Kantrow, who is heading to a postdoc position at Caltech.

At Georgia Tech, Henry appreciated the exposure to highly collaborative, multidisciplinary research, which helped him grow not only as a chemical engineer, but also as a materials scientist, physical chemist, and polymer physicist.

“Ultimately, I hope to continue in academia and become a professor of chemical engineering, materials science, and/or chemistry.” he said.

His Ph.D. work centered on the photophysics of conducting polymers. At Caltech, he'll move into new territory, developing benchtop transient soft X-ray and extreme ultraviolet spectroscopy techniques.

“Without a doubt, these next steps in my career would not be possible without the opportunities afforded to me during my Ph.D. studies at Georgia Tech,” he said.
