The 2025-2026 school year was a busy one for the Hubert Department of Global Health as we supported students in exploring global health through research, competition, artistic expression, and community-building, showing us that there will be no shortage of young leaders who are ready to push the field forward with courage and determination.

Over the summer of 2025 nine Emory students across all its schools were given funded opportunities to conduct real-world global health research in Brazil, Kenya, and India in the Global Health Scholars Program.

Dr. Jeffrey Lesser led students Alexandra Caridad Llovet (SOM/RSPH), Paula Manfredini (LGS), María José Vélez (LGS), and Luana Mendes Nascimento (UNIFESP) on a project centered around immigrant women’s healthcare access in São Paulo, Brazil.

Dr. John Blevins led students Imani Belton (LGS) and Nancy Irungu (RSPH) on a project examining the sociocultural factors that influence the care-seeking behaviors of women with HIV in Kenya.

Dr. Anant Madabhushi led students Farhan Hoodbhoy (LGS), Rima Pai (RSPH/LGS), and Yash Kamdar (ECAS) on a project developing an AI-enabled digital pathology platform for cancer prognostic tools in India.

These Global Health Scholars were also asked to submit photos from their experiences to the Global Health Photography Contest, where all Emory students were eligible to share photographs that highlighted a global health issue or cause. This past year we broke submission records with over 120 beautiful and unique photos from students attending all nine Emory schools for our panel of judges to select from.

This year’s five winners represented Rollins School of Public Health, the College of Arts and Sciences, and Laney Graduate School. They were honored in the fall at the 2025 In Focus event as part of International Education Week with a certificate, canvas display of their photographs, high praise from the judges, and cash prizes.

The first place photograph, “Last Month Gaining Weight,” is pictured above, taken by Semuel Hendrik Nofa Bonai of RSPH. To see all the top five photographs, their descriptive captions, and read some judges’ comments, please see our previous posts.

This past March, the Hubert Department of Global Health hosted the 18th Annual The Koplan Award: Emory Morningside Global Health Case Competition; the largest and longest running global health case competition of its kind.
This year, 31 multidisciplinary teams from institutions across four continents tackled a complex and urgent challenge: rethinking the role of ultra-processed foods in humanitarian crisis settings.
The case, Beyond Calories: A Food Systems Challenge, pushed students to design solutions not for a single setting, but for a broader systems-level problem; requiring adaptability, critical-thinking, and real-world judgment under constraint.

Congratulations to all participating teams for the rigor, creativity, and discipline they brought to this year’s challenge.  We extend our gratitude to The Marcus Foundation, our case advisors and judges, Student Advisory Committee members, and the faculty and staff of the Hubert Department of Global Health for making this possible.

At a time of growing global health challenges, The Koplan Award underscores the importance of equipping students with the skills and perspective needed to design solutions that are responsive, resilient, and grounded in real-world constraints.

On the third day of National Public Health Week, we are joining in on Ready, Set, Action! Flood the Feed, a coordinated social media initiative highlighting the strength and impact of the public health community. There is no better exemplar of this than the ingenuity and creativity of our students. Last February we hosted our annual Intramural Global Health Case Competition, where this year's challenge—Aging in Place in Georgia: The 2035 Dilemma – A Statewide Systems Challenge—asked interdisciplinary student teams to design bold, systems-level solutions to support Georgia’s aging population. The competition continues to showcase the power of cross-school collaboration at Emory University and prepares students to tackle complex, real-world health challenges.

As you can see from the genuine joy, laughter, and camaraderie in these photos, global health is very much a field that is alive and thriving. Whatever challenges may be thrown at the field of public health, its future leaders are resilient, passionate, and strengthened by true connections and support.

🏅 5th Place of the 2025 Emory Global Health Institute Global Health Photography Contest

"Riding the Tide of Waste" by James Burton, RSPH

This photograph captures a young Bajau child off the coast of Southern Sulawesi, Indonesia, playfully navigating the turquoise waters on a discarded styrofoam box — a fragment of the waste that has become part of their oceanic landscape. The Bajau, a sea-dwelling people whose livelihoods depend entirely on the ocean, are facing the mounting consequences of anthropogenic climate change and pollution. Rising sea levels, coral bleaching, and plastic contamination threaten both their food security and way of life. Every meal, every breath, every playtime moment ties them to the same waters now burdened with human debris. What appears as childhood joy conceals a stark reality: a community adapting to an environment transformed by global neglect. From a global health perspective, this image underscores the intersection of environmental degradation, nutrition, and human health. Contaminated marine ecosystems lead to bioaccumulation of toxins in food sources, respiratory and dermatologic issues, and long-term displacement risks. “Riding the Tide of Waste” is a visual reminder that the health of our oceans is inseparable from the health of the people who depend on them.
