Yesterday, we said “see you later” to Dr. Troy Story ’62—an extraordinary physical chemist, scholar, and beloved colleague who retired from Morehouse College in 2016.
Dr. Story’s journey began right at Morehouse, where he earned his B.S. in Chemistry before completing his Ph.D. at UC Berkeley. His distinguished career included postdoctoral work and staff appointments at the UC Space Sciences Laboratory and the Physics Institute at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden.
Internationally recognized for his pioneering work in differential geometry and exterior calculus, Dr. Story developed a unifying mathematical model for dynamic systems—linking Hamiltonian mechanics, thermodynamics, black holes, and string theory. His brilliance led to the publication of four influential books and solidified his reputation as a leading applied mathematician.
Yet beyond his intellectual achievements, Dr. Story was most passionate about teaching the Men of Morehouse. With a sharp mind and a wonderful sense of humor, he inspired generations of students to think critically and deeply about both mathematics and chemistry!
Job well done, Dr. Story!! Thank you for leaving an indelible mark on the Morehouse community: students, faculty, and staff! Your legacy will live on—through the student’s you’ve taught and mentored along with lives you’ve shaped and careers you’ve empowered.
The Department of Chemistry extends its heartfelt condolences for “The STORY of science and spirituality” that you’ve told so well (coined by Dean Carter at Celebration of Life).
