Kicking off the summer the Spelman way! Spelmanites traveled to Cape Town, South Africa, through the Office of Health Careers and the Environmental and Health Sciences Department for a transformative study abroad experience led by Ms. Maria Loftin and Dr. Rosalind Gregory Bass, C’92. While abroad, students conducted research and explored the intersections of history, culture, and healthcare, gaining global health perspectives and deepening their understanding of health disparities impacting communities around the world.

From the classroom to the community, these future healthcare leaders are expanding their worldviews, strengthening their commitment to service, and preparing to create meaningful change. The future of medicine is bright!

We proudly celebrate trailblazing Black feminist scholar, author, and Spelman College professor Beverly Guy-Sheftall, C’66, who delivered the keynote address at Mount Holyoke College’s 189th Commencement ceremony. In her inspiring remarks, Guy-Sheftall reflected on her extraordinary 60-year career as a feminist agitator and championed the enduring importance of women’s colleges in educating diverse, gender-marginalized students and cultivating the next generation of leaders. Thank you, Dr. Guy-Sheftall, for continuing to inspire communities around the world through your scholarship, advocacy, and unwavering commitment to justice and education.

This commencement season, we celebrate more than degrees. We celebrate determination, resilience, and the power of community support.

Through the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation’s $50 million HBCU scholarship initiative, nearly 600 students across Spelman College, Morehouse College, and Clark Atlanta University have received more than $4.2 million in gap funding to help them stay enrolled and cross the finish line.

This weekend, the initiative’s first spring graduates will walk across the stage, proving that investing in students changes lives, families, and communities for generations to come. This year’s Top Ten graduates represent a dynamic range of majors and future paths, with seven students earning the distinction of valedictorian by achieving a perfect 4.0 GPA. The salutatorian honor is awarded to the next highest-ranking graduate, and Latin honors, cm laude, magna cm laude, and summa cm laude, are determined by cumulative GPA thresholds established by the College.
