Alexis Graham, C’2028, recently attended Duke University’s 10th Annual Doctor of Physical Therapy Summer Discovery Program, where she explored specialties including orthopedics, pelvic floor rehabilitation, vestibular dysfunction, lymphedema management, and patient examination. A Psychology major on the pre-physical therapy track, Alexis is a member of Spelman’s chapter of the National Association of Black Physical Therapists and Co-Captain of the Spelman Jaguarettes for the 2025–2026 academic year. During the program, she engaged with clinicians across practice settings and connected with Duke DPT graduate and Spelman alumna Cierra Berry, C'2022. Alexis completed the experience, earning a certificate in recognition of her achievement and commitment to the field of physical therapy.

Last night, our sisters came together for an inspiring evening of conversation, storytelling, and celebration as Amena Brown, C’2002, joined Tayari Jones, C’91, to discuss “Never Tell a Black Girl How to Black Girl: Essays.” Through humor, heart, and cultural reflection, Amena’s collection honors the wisdom of Southern Black women and the power of community that continues to uplift and sustain us. We are proud to celebrate two remarkable alumnae whose voices, creativity, and storytelling continue to shape culture and inspire change.

It’s been one month since the “Oh So Lit” Class of 2026 crossed the stage and stepped into alumnaehood. As we celebrate this milestone, we reflect on the powerful charge delivered by Rev. Dr. Gina M. Stewart: “I believe there are 569 women who have an assignment to work the riverbank. I believe there are women who are not ashamed to stand on the riverbank, and I’m glad because that’s how you make the choice to change the world. I believe that you are the ones who will do it. Now go and change the world.” One month down, a lifetime of impact ahead. We can’t wait to see how the Class of 2026 transforms communities, industries, and the world.

This summer, Hannah A. Richardson, C'2029, is gaining hands-on research experience as a Biomedical Basic Science Scholar at Temple University’s Lewis Katz School of Medicine. Following an engaging orientation focused on professional development and lab preparation, Hannah began training in molecular biology techniques, including DNA extraction and purification methods that will serve as the foundation for her research. Under the mentorship of Dr. Vincent Tam, Hannah will explore how immune cell metabolism is regulated during infection and inflammatory signaling.

Congratulations to Dr. Narketta Sparkman-Key, Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs, on being invited to serve as a guest scholar at Michigan State University’s Summer Research Opportunity Program.

Through her workshop, “The Journey from Student to Scholar,” Dr. Sparkman-Key inspired talented students from across the country to embrace research as a pathway to discovery, growth, and impact. Her message of authenticity, resilience, and intellectual empowerment encouraged participants to overcome challenges and pursue academic excellence with confidence.
