Center for Education Integrating Science Math and Computing (CEISMC) Bringing Georgia Tech's Spirit of Research & Innovation to K-12 STEM Education in Georgia as part of the College of Lifetime Learning!

The Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics, and Computing (CEISMC) (pronounced like "seismic") is a unit of the College of Lifetime Learning at Georgia Tech. Since 1991, CEISMC has served as the primary connection point between Georgia Tech and the pre-collegiate education communities. CEISMC provides inclusive and inspiring STEM/STEAM enrichment experiences in classroom and out-of-

school settings. CEISMC develops an extensive array of research and implementation programs focused on multiple dimensions of STEM educational reform. CEISMC offers teacher professional development focused on innovative curricula and evidence-based practices in fields such as STEM with arts and music integration, computer science, robotics, invention and entrepreneurship. These opportunities and initiatives are achieved through school and community outreach and local and sustainable partnerships that foster student success and workforce development. EXCEL, Georgia Tech's inclusive postsecondary and education opportunity housed within CEISMC, is a four-year college certificate program for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

One of the biggest conversations shaping the future of higher education is how we can support learning across a lifetime. This Fall, the Georgia Tech College of Lifetime Learning is hosting a Learning Symposium to bring together educators, researchers, industry leaders, and policymakers to explore the future of learning. Join us Oct. 26-28 at Georgia Tech for conversations on how to adapt to emerging technologies and evolve systems and experiences that enable learning across every stage of life. Innovation, teamwork, and problem-solving were on full display as students from 24 countries gathered at the Georgia Tech for the inaugural Georgia Ramblin’ Robots Invitationals, a world-level FIRST LEGO League Challenge event. The competition brought together talented young innovators to showcase their robotics, coding, research, and engineering skills while building connections with peers from around the globe.

Wrapped up another wonderful summer! ☀️

Over the past few months, we’ve watched students explore STEM through hands-on learning, tackle engineering and design challenges, build coding and robotics skills, conduct experiments, and discover new interests alongside their peers.

Thank you to our instructors, staff, and collaborators for making another successful summer possible, and to our students and families for the support.

Students turned environmental data into meaningful insights during our summer camp on Data Visualization & the Environment! 🌎

Funded by an NSF AISL grant, 21 students from Snellville Middle School got to explore environmental data and learn how to create visualizations in Tableau. To close out their time with the program, they presented capstone projects on environmental issues impacting their communities.

A special thank you to GIFT Teacher Dejon Mackin-Irving for leading the camp, and to Jayma Koval, Sabrina Grossman, Rachel Warren, and Jessica Roberts, as well as to Jessica Roberts' lab members Seik Oh, Yuhan Wang, and Bhumika Somesh Saini for helping make this experience possible!

Reconnecting with the educators who make STEM learning happen! 🤝

A few weeks ago, we had the pleasure of welcoming educators back to campus for a reunion with Sabrina Grossman and Jayma Koval from our CEISMC team. From GoSTEAM to the SLIDER program, educators like Lorenzo and Charmagne have collaborated with CEISMC to bring innovative, hands-on STEM learning into their classrooms.

Years later, their experiences continue to inspire new ideas, strengthen connections, and remind us of the lasting impact of educator partnerships. 🔬 We're so grateful to have reconnected with members of our educator community and to celebrate the work accomplished together, as well as the work that lies ahead!

Congratulations to Dr. Eunhye Grace Flavin on her recent publication in “Educational Studies in Mathematics”, a renowned journal in mathematics education!

Her study, “Lekòl, Legliz, and Lakay: Haitian immigrant parental engagement in mathematics education”, explores how Haitian immigrant parents support their children’s mathematics learning across home, school, and church communities. Specifically, it highlights broader contributions afforded by parents, showing how they, as resourceful partners in the learning process, can leverage community and cultural wealth to create meaningful learning opportunities and sustain their children’s success.

Flavin’s work reflects the importance of expansive learning, recognizing that learning extends beyond the classroom and that families and communities are essential partners in students’ educational journeys. This perspective closely aligns with CEISMC’s commitment to building meaningful connections between schools, communities, and STEM learning.

Students got hands-on with circuits during the week-long Spark Squad program, offered through our Expanded Learning Programs ⚡️ Dr. Adrianne Redmond worked to bring innovative and engaging approaches to hands-on learning, allowing students to explore how electricity flows and experiment with designing and testing circuits. Founded in 1991, the Georgia Immersive Fellowship for Teachers (GIFT) program has empowered educators for 35 years to bring research, innovation, and real-world STEM experiences to their classrooms.

This year’s GIFT fellows got together with the Research Experiences for Pre-Service Teachers program at a collaborative symposium to showcase the work they developed through their 5-6 week experience. Educators spent these past few weeks alongside researchers and mentors to develop summer learning into meaningful, classroom-ready ideas and practices. We’re so proud to celebrate their hard work and the impact they’ll carry, as well as the legacy that GIFT has led in transforming STEM education!
