The School of Aerospace Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology is one of the oldest – and largest – educational programs of its kind in the country. Army personnel in aviation matters as early as 1917. A stand-alone department was formed in 1930 after receiving the seventh – and last – grant from the Daniel Guggenheim fund. Known then as the Daniel Guggenheim School of Aeronautics, its name was officially changed to the School of Aerospace Engineering on July 1, 1962.

Georgia Tech researchers are part of a four-year, $7.76 million collaboration funded by NASA's University Leadership Initiative (ULI) to better understand and reduce noise from aircraft. (https://www.nasa.gov/aeronautics/nasa-selects-university-teams-to-help-advance-aviation-research/).

Led by Stanford University AeroAstro the project brings together researchers from Georgia Tech, UC Berkeley Mechanical Engineering, and California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly)-San Luis Obispo, along with Blue Ridge Research and Consulting, LLC, and industry partner Joby Aviation.

The Georgia Tech team, led by AE Assistant Professor Beckett Y. Zhou, Dr.-Ing. Zhou, is developing advanced computational tools to predict how aircraft noise travels through urban environments and identify flight paths that can minimize impacts on surrounding communities.

The work could help make future air mobility operations quieter, more efficient, and more acceptable to the people living beneath them.

The latest spacecraft developed at Georgia Tech was just delivered to NASA Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. The mission, Green Propulsion Dual Mode (GPDM), will showcase a new advanced propulsion system.

GPDM will undergo final testing at NASA before launching on board a rocket later this fall. Like the Lunar Flashlight mission, the GPDM spacecraft will be student-controlled out of the Georgia Tech Mission Operations Center.

Professor Christos Athanasiou is helping answer that question through a new graduate course in Georgia Tech Aerospace Engineering. AE 8803: Fracture Mechanics combines first-principles engineering, physical intuition, and AI-enabled learning tools to help students solve complex problems while developing a deep understanding of the physics behind them.

Mitchell Walker is the new dean of engineering at Georgia Tech. A respected researcher in advanced propulsion, Walker has been a faculty member & leader in the AE School since 2005.

“Mitchell’s leadership and achievements reflect the excellence and innovation that define Georgia Tech,” Provost Raheem Beyah said.
