GSU Geosciences is the place to be for cutting edge research and education into the world around us. Our students, faculty, and staff are engaged in studying the geology and geochemistry of the natural world, physical and human geography, and challenges faced by communities and cities and their solutions. In addition to our disciplinary scholarship and education in Earth Systems, People Places & Environment, and Cities, we also offer cross-cutting expertise in Geospatial Science using the latest GIS and mobile technologies.

Wrapping up sharing some of the amazing things our students did this summer is Julianna M***a (MS Geoscience)! Over the summer, she participated in research at Oak Ridge National Laboratory with the Watershed Dynamics and Evolution (WaDE) group. Her project evaluated how urbanization disrupts the variance collapse of stream chemistry using statistical methods in R, demonstrating how anthropogenic "chemical cocktails" overwrite the geochemical baseline of streams. This internship helped to refine her skills in data analysis and gave her a firsthand look into how national laboratories are currently tackling environmental challenges.

Kicking off this week with major kudos AND summer adventures from Keya Hopwood (BS Geoscience, current MS Geoscience). Keya was awarded a Geological Society of America Graduate Research Grant, specifically the Lipman Student Research Grant from the Mineralogy, Geochemistry, Petrology, and Volcanology Division to support XRD/XRF and hyperspectral geochemical analyses for their project "The value of field spectrometers: Mineralogical baselines and hyperspectral models for tunnel d**e." The project focuses on utilizing MCMC modelling to infer mineral proportions from UV-NIR-VIS field spectrometry data of Tunnel D**e, OR.

In addition, Keya was selected to participate in the Earth Surface Processes Institute (ESPIn) in Boulder, CO this summer!

Last Saturday, Dr. Freshour took students from her Political Geography course down to the Ocmulgee Mounds Festival. This trip provided an opportunity to meet course collaborators at Emory through the LINC (Learning through Inclusive Collaboration) program. Through LINC, Drs. Freshour (GSU, political geography) and Kannan (Emory cultural rhetorics) connect their course work and final projects around questions of land, territory, belonging, and place-based writing and knowledge creation. Students and faculty in GSU's Sankofa Society (GSU Africana studies) also joined them on the trip. They learned about Mvskoke ancestral lands, everyday practices of este-cate sovereignty, and the Mvskoke nation's work to create Georgia's first national park.

Our next summer adventure is from Deavon Mcdew. Deavon (M.S. Geoscience) interned at Oak Ridge National Lab with Dr. Marie Kurz and Dr. Jonny Behrens in the biogeochemistry group. While there, he used R to compare dissolved oxygen and specific conductivity at different stream sites to investigate how variance in environmental condition and water chemistry might influence stream metabolism.

Georgia Patterson (B.S. 2026, current M.S. Geoscience) spent her summer in Southeast Alaska, working as a bicycle tour guide for Sockeye Cycle Co in Skagway, Alaska. She spent her workday teaching groups about the area’s history, geography, climate, and wildlife as they biked through the coastal temperate rainforest of Dyea or down the glacially carved White Pass. She spent her off hours hiking, cycling, camping, and volunteering with NPS to survey coastal birds along the uppermost portion of the Lynn canal. This experience taught her new ways to appreciate the environment and ways she can share that appreciation wherever she is.

Our next summer story is from Eileen Mburu, M.S. in Geosciences. Eileen won first place in the 2026 Georgia Geospatial Association Virtual Map Competition! Later in the summer, she traveled to San Diego to participate in the ESRI User Conference as a Student Assistant. Her winning GGA map, "The Geography of Climate Change Discourse in the United State: Public Perceptions from Twitter (2015-2019)" was featured in the conference's Interactive Map Gallery! She was able to engaged with the latest GIS technology at the world's largest geospatial gathering and connect with GIS practitioners and researchers leading in the field.
