Going Green

Working with partners across campus and beyond, the Georgia State University Office of Sustainability serves as a hub to create and communicate innovative solutions to our most pressing global challenges. We act as the catalyst for creating a culture of sustainability at GSU through enhancing living-learning laboratory opportunities on campus, exploring techniques to lower our resource use and costs and empowering our students to become global leaders in sustainability.

Today, we’re highlighting Panther’s Pantry!

Panther’s Pantry provides food and hygiene products to support student well-being and success!

Using grant funds, the pantry established a refill and reuse initiative. A mobile shampoo and body wash refill station reduces single-use plastic reliance, all while increasing equitable access to hygiene resources.

Patrons can to donate reusable bags back to Panther’s Pantry for others to use!

In Spring 2026, 68 students participated in the refill and reuse program, and a majority of patrons agreed to consolidate their hygiene and food items into fewer reusable bags!

Next Saturday will be our last Campus Sustainability Grant Saturday, keep an eye out!

Yesterday, we hosted a See the Waste event at Piedmont Central! 🍽️

During the lunch rush, we collected and sorted the food waste to highlight how students’ daily food choices add up.

Students were able to guess the total weight for chance to win a re:loom sustainable swag bag!

The total weight was 113 lbs!

This event encouraged students to make more mindful, sustainable choices at the dining halls.

Early voting for the November 3 General Election has begun.

Early voting ends October 30. Visit mvp.sos.ga.gov (linked in our bio) to check your registration status, preview your ballot, and find an early voting location near you.

Early voting starts today for the November 3rd General Election!

Everyone will have state-wide elections on their ballot. However, everyone should still check their ballot! Depending on where you live, you might have independent elections for your state district, municipality, and county.

Happy !

Today, we’re highlighting our Sustainable Dining Initiatives: OZZI and Fill it Forward, Panther Farm, and Streamline!

PantherDining has funded these three projects using the Sustainability Grant Program!

PantherDining’s Fill it Forward and OZZI program provides students with OZZI takeout containers for the dining halls. For each meal, students exchange used containers for clean ones and track each exchange through the Fill it Forward app, which donates $0.02 to charity for each container returned. Last year, the program avoided 3,500 pounds of food container waste!

Panther Farm is a hydroponic farm built inside a shipping container. It uses climate-controlled technology to grow fresh produce year-round while using less resources than traditional agriculture would. Last year, Panther Farm harvested more than 230 pounds of fresh produce!

Streamline (formerly recognized as Raccoon Eyes), is a food waste tracking system that uses AI to reduce food waste in dining halls. The system identifies waste trends so that Sustainability Initiatives can target specific foods and how to reduce their waste. Last year, Streamline along with Sustainability Initiatives prevented 2,073 pounds of fruit waste just by changing the size of a three-ounce serving spoon to one ounce!

Applications for the Campus Sustainability Grant Program are now open! 📢

This year, we will be allocating ~$100,000 in grant funding to various proposals and projects that advances sustainability at Georgia State through education, research, service and campus operations.

Applications are open to any current Georgia State student, faculty or staff member from any campus. Proposals can be submitted as an individual proposal, or on behalf of a student club, registered student organization or university department.

This program is funded by Student Sustainability Fees! 💲

It’s another ! 🎉

Today, we’re highlighting Recirculating Water Pumps in Georgia State chemistry labs!

Many chemistry experiments rely on continuously running water to cool lab equipment. Last year, faculty members Thomas Robilotto, Ph.D., and David Connors, Ph.D., in the Department of Chemistry received a Campus Sustainability Grant to implement recirculating water pumps in Chemistry 2100 laboratories. The system reduced water use by more than 99 percent during select experiments by allowing students to use just one liter of recirculated water instead of continuously running the tap, conserving approximately 3 million liters annually.

Using funds from the Campus Sustainability Grant Program this year, the Department of Chemistry expanded the system to Chemistry 1212. This year’s Grant supported the installation of an additional 110 recirculating water pumps, extending the water-saving technology to approximately 1,296 students each academic year. The expansion is expected to conserve more than 1 million additional liters of water annually, bringing the system’s estimated annual water savings across both courses to more than 4 million liters.

It’s another ! 🎉

Today, we are highlighting the Student Government Association’s Sustainable Commuting project!

Using grant funds from the Campus Sustainability Grant Program, SGA added 45 new hoop bike racks, 10 scooter racks and 3 bicycle repair stations, creating 130 new bike and scooter parking spots!

This project also established Georgia State’s first secure bike and scooter parking area at U-Lot! 🔒
