Georgia State University Sustainability Initiatives Going Green

Working with partners across campus and beyond, the Georgia State University Office of Sustainability serves as a hub to create and communicate innovative solutions to our most pressing global challenges. We act as the catalyst for creating a culture of sustainability at GSU through enhancing living-learning laboratory opportunities on campus, exploring techniques to lower our resource use and costs and empowering our students to become global leaders in sustainability.

It’s day seven of !

Today we are highlighting Green Tailgates ♻️

Football tailgates generate a significant amount of recyclable waste, but recycling opportunities in tailgate areas have historically been limited.

Green Tailgates brought recycling stations back to Georgia State football tailgates, making it easier to recycle aluminum cans and introducing a culture of sustainability among fans.

Staffed by Sustainability Initiatives interns and volunteers, the program diverted 157 pounds of recyclable material from landfills during the football season, including 141 pounds of aluminum cans!

Through the Recycle for Good program, the aluminum cans collected were recycled to generate funding for Habitat for Humanity, supporting affordable housing near Georgia State’s Atlanta Campus.

Right now, Sustainability Initiatives is seeking volunteers to help staff the next Green Tailgate this Friday, September 4! You’ll get to learn about sustainable event management, gain professional sustainability experience, and earn volunteer hours.

Multiple shifts will be available for all Georgia State home games this season, so keep an eye out for more opportunities to contribute!

Make sure to come back next Saturday, when we’ll be highlighting another winner of the Campus Sustainability Grant Program! 💙

We hosted this workshop to hear feedback regarding Georgia State’s transportation context, travel behaviors and preferences, as well as current and potential practices and mobility strategies!

This feedback will help inform Georgia State’s Commuter Choices Vision and Workplan, which will guide efforts towards improving commuter choice options through programs, policies and infrastructure!

The biggest thank you to everyone who attended the workshop! 💙

It’s ! ⏰

Today, we are looking back to the end of the spring semester when we hosted Green Goodbyes!

Green Goodbyes is our end-of-year initiative where we have donation bins at each residential hall for students to donate items when they move out of their dorm!

This year, we collected textiles, e-waste, books and food!

We ended up diverting 8,784 pounds of materials from the landfill! 👗

Thank you to all of the students who donated items!

The biggest thank you to our recycling crew who helped out during this time. We couldn’t have done it without you! 💙
