Georgia Tech Professional Education is an academic division of the Georgia Institute of Technology, which consistently ranks as one of the nation’s top 10 public universities by U.S. News & World Report. Professional Education offers professional master's programs, short courses, and certificate programs to meet the needs of working professionals and industry partners. Programs are available world

wide through a variety of face-to-face, blended learning, and online formats. In addition to professional course offerings, the division administers K-12 outreach and English as a Second Language programs, and manages meeting and event facilities. On an annual basis, Professional Education enrolls more than 129,000 students and works with 1,600 companies. It is located at the Georgia Tech Global Learning Center in Atlanta and at the Georgia Tech-Savannah campus.

The rise of engineered stone countertops comes with a hidden cost. Workers who cut and fabricate these materials face serious health risks from exposure to silica dust, which can cause silicosis, a potentially fatal lung disease.

Jenny Houlroyd, an environmental health and safety specialist and occupational safety instructor, spoke with Bloomberg Law about the unique challenges Georgia workers face because silica-related disease isn’t tracked or addressed the same way it is in other states.

“There is really no way under the current framework for us to know if there are cases and how many people would be diagnosed, which is why there’s such an urgency from researchers,” Houlroyd says.

“We know there are these gaps in surveillance, and we know that because of those gaps in surveillance, there are probably a large number of undocumented cases.”

Georgia Tech is launching a new high-tech cloud lab that will enable researchers nationwide to direct work remotely, refine experiments, and access critical data from anywhere.

Demonstrating that innovation and accessibility go hand in hand, the lab aims to leverage artificial intelligence and simulation to reduce costs and expand opportunities for researchers to advance their work more efficiently and effectively.

Aaron Stebner, executive director of the Professional Master’s in Manufacturing Leadership program, is excited about the potential to accelerate the research process.

“It might take a person three, four, or five weeks of training just to be able to do one piece of work that returns valuable data or correct data. By having all of this pre-programmed and programmable on demand, all of that burden is removed,” he said.

The lab is supported by an $18 million grant from the National Science Foundation and is part of an effort to form a national network of cloud labs at 20 sites across the country.

Help us congratulate Georgia Tech expert and OMS Analytics faculty member Eunhye Song on her role as vice president/president-elect of the INFORMS Simulation (I-SIM) Society!

In her new role, she will help guide an organization that’s dedicated to pushing the boundaries of simulation research and practice, focusing on the most relevant and emerging areas in the field.

“We have much more data, computing power, and the ability to build more detailed simulation models than ever before,” Song said. “That’s exciting because we’re getting closer to accurately representing what’s happening in the real system.”

AI and cybersecurity: Friend or foe? The answer is more complicated than it seems.

It’s no secret that artificial intelligence is reshaping the cybersecurity landscape. Cybercriminals are using AI to accelerate attacks and identify vulnerabilities faster than ever before. Recent attacks on water systems around the country have shown that critical infrastructure remains an attractive target because it often relies on legacy technology to provide essential services.

Georgia Tech experts say the biggest concern is not that AI is creating a new form of cyberattacks. Instead, it’s making threats quicker, cheaper and harder to stop.
As OMS Cybersecurity instructor Brendan Saltaformaggio explains, "Unfortunately, everyone is at risk. AI is not creating new victims; AI is making attackers faster and more effective at targeting the same organizations they have always pursued."

The good news? AI can strengthen defenses.

"AI's primary impact on cyberattacks is enhancing speed and scale," says OMS Cybersecurity instructor Frank Li. "Organizations need to adapt to more agile defenses and processes that account for this, in many cases relying on AI as well to help speed up defensive actions."
