Last week, the Gerontology Institute held our Fall Open House for students and faculty. We were delighted to welcome site visitors from the Gerontological Society of America to join our students and faculty members to hear from our community partners on what makes partnership with the Gerontology Institute valuable? We heard from Deke Cateau, CEO of A.G. Rhodes; Becky Kurtz, Director of the Atlanta Area Agency on Aging with the Atlanta Regional Commission; Daphne Johnston, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Respite for All; and the new Associate Dean for Nursing at GSU - our long-time collaborator and ALTER program co-founder - Dr. Fayron Epps. A big shout-out and thank you to our community partners. The work we get to do with you makes it all worthwhile.

Master's in Gerontology students and Student Leaders of Sigma Phi Omega and the new Vanguard Scholars student organization got a chance to share their accomplishments and plans with our GSA site visitors last week. Thank you to Dr. Tamara Baker, James Appleby and Dr. Lisa McGuire for taking the time to listen and give feedback to our students. Brittany Williams - recent BIS graduate and new MA student - presented her capstone poster on engagement for bedbound hospice patients. Angela Cook, President of Vanguard Scholars, talked about our new student organization to support non-traditional students at GSU (https://t.gsu.edu/3LCTPO2), and Sonya Williams, Michelle Montalvo, and Allison Witte - the executive leadership of our SPO chapter - talked about the many activities planned to bring students together for networking and service. We've got a busy year planned!

Do you know someone with MCI or early-state dementia? Are you a care partner for someone living with dementia? The Alzheimer's Association is leading the effort to recruit lived experience panels! In collaboration with the state of Georgia, The State Alzheimer’s Research Support (StARS) Center Lived Experience Panels are a diverse group of persons living with dementia and caregivers who will convene quarterly to inform their state’s efforts to improve dementia care services. By sharing their lived experience, panel members bring invaluable information and provide real-world experience to inform their state's dementia care services.

Every year we recognize representatives of three important contributors to GSU Gerontology - faculty, alumni and community partners. This year we are excited to announce that Dr. Debra Tann received the Distinguished Faculty Award; Celeste Greene '14 received the Distinguished Alumni Award; and Amanda Lee Williams received the Distinguished Service Award. Gerontology is incredibly fortunate to have SEVEN endowed scholarships to support our students' education. We were able to celebrate our scholarship winners at the Gerontology Awards Ceremony.
