Wisdom from our own Dr. Skipper - trust the process!

Today, Gerontology professor Dr. Antonius D. Skipper reminds us to trust the process.

"I remember my days at Georgia State as a student, and every issue, hiccup, or curveball seemed like the end of the world. In the end, it all worked out," Skipper said.

Do you know someone with MCI or early-state dementia? Are you a care partner for someone living with dementia? The Alzheimer's Association is leading the effort to recruit lived experience panels! In collaboration with the state of Georgia, The State Alzheimer’s Research Support (StARS) Center Lived Experience Panels are a diverse group of persons living with dementia and caregivers who will convene quarterly to inform their state’s efforts to improve dementia care services. By sharing their lived experience, panel members bring invaluable information and provide real-world experience to inform their state's dementia care services.

Every year we recognize representatives of three important contributors to GSU Gerontology - faculty, alumni and community partners. This year we are excited to announce that Dr. Debra Tann received the Distinguished Faculty Award; Celeste Greene '14 received the Distinguished Alumni Award; and Amanda Lee Williams received the Distinguished Service Award. Look for a write-up on each of these amazing individuals in the next GSU Gerontology newsletter. For now, congratulations all!

Please join me in congratulating our Gerontology Institute student award winners! They've worked tirelessly to learn, grow, and get ready to serve older adults and their care partners in policy, applied, research, community and clinical roles. We can't wait to see all they accomplish as they continue their journeys. Congratulations to the Outstanding Undergraduate Awardee (Brittany Williams), two Outstanding Graduate Awardees (Tina Cifuentes & Eliot Amehlor), and two Outstanding Graduate Certificate Students (Jasmine Mann & Mark Lassetter).

The Scholars With A.G. Rhodes (SWAGR) program @ GSU Gerontology showcased several capstone projects at this week's GSU Aging Research Conference. Each student chose a quality improvement project, did the research, communicated with teams at A.G. Rhodes and developed material to support improvements to person-centered care at. A.G. Rhodes. We are very proud of these students and the impact they are already making in the community. A big thank you and shout out to A.G. Rhodes and their leadership teams that support and encourage these students to think big and get hands-on skills in long-term care.

The 5th GSU Aging Research Conference showcased 42 aging research posters by both graduate and undergraduate students. Thank you to the planning committee - Professors Skipper, Kerew, Kershner, Morgan & Barber. Thanks to our co-sponsor the Center for Law, Health and Society. Thanks to all the judges and to all those who attended. We had a fabulous time sharing our research and hearing from the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences (Dean Todd Rosenstiel) about the new initiative - Transforming Aging, Better Lives, Better Futures. Stay tuned for more to come.
