Add it to your playlist: Assistant Professor of Ethics Craig Ford and his course “Q***r Theology and Q***r Ethics” were recently featured on Atlanta's WABE public radio show "Closer Look" with Rose Scott.

"I knew how important this course was to me in my direction and in my future scholarship," Ford said during his interview. "And I thought how important this course would be for other people, especially people who are becoming ministers that we teach at Candler."

Teaching students about the intersection of faith, LGBTQ+ identity and ethics is a full-circle moment for Craig Ford. The assistant professor at Emory University's Candler School of Theology was once a student at Yale Divinity School. Associate Professor of Latinx Communities Jonathan Calvillo was recently named a 2026-2027 PRRI Public Fellow.

He's one of nine interdisciplinary scholars who will collaborate with the nonpartisan nonprofit's researchers to generate impactful commentary and analysis at the intersection of religion, culture, and politics. As a Public Fellow, Calvillo's area of focus will be immigration and American society.

His work at Candler examines how distinct Latinx populations build communities of belonging through faith and creativity, often in the face of systemic exclusion.

What's changing in the Black Church today, and what are the broader social and political implications of these shifts?

The Candler Black Church Studies Program will welcome Jason E. Shelton, professor of sociology and director of the Center for African American Studies at The University of Texas at Arlington, to address these questions and more in this year’s Howard Thurman Lecture.
