As of this week, the entire School of Music has now learned that Professor Petrasek is a twin. Yesterday we invited Dr. Daniel Anastasio to our campus to give a lovely lecture recital and masterclass on audience engagement, stage presence, and how to really research the pieces you are performing to give engaging context to your audience. That evening, he led a solo piano recital and the sibling duo closed with the Sancan Sonatine and Poulenc Sonata. Bravo all around! 💙👏

The Mid-South Flute Society will welcome Jessica Petrasek as our guest artist for the 2027 flute festival at the University of Memphis on February 26-27. She is the assistant principal flute of Colorado Music Festival, has previously been the principal flute of the Knoxville Symphony and piccolo for the Kansas City Symphony, and she currently teaches at Georgia State. Jessica was on NPR’s “From the Top,” became a Presidential Scholar in the Arts, and won the National Foundation of the Advancement of the Arts YoungARTS Silver Award. She is a previous fellow at Tanglewood Music Center and a graduate of Princeton and Rice. We are so excited to hear her in concert, and to see her teach at the masterclass! 🤩

Check out the Mid-South Flute Society’s website for more information about competitions and about submitting proposals to present or perform at the festival. 🪈🎶

The GSflUtes are led by Jessica Petrasek, Lecturer of Flute. Along with being GSU faculty, Professor Petrasek is the Associate Principal Flute of the Colorado Music Festival, Third Flute/Piccolo of the Columbus Symphony, and half of the Petrasek Duo, a flute and percussion duo of her and her husband, fellow percussion faculty Joe Petrasek.

Flutists of the studio train at a high caliber in preparation for professional auditions, competitions, and for a fruitful, musical life. Studio topics include (but are not limited to) rehearsal etiquette, second flute excerpts, stage presence, and collaborative music making. We also frequently welcome guest artists for masterclasses and GSU Flute Day every spring.

Email Prof. Petrasek for prospective visits, trial lessons, and anything you would like to know about the SOM! 💙🤍

Panthers at the Symphony… less than 24 hours apart! Last night members of the flute studio and Prof. Petrasek went to go see the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra perform Prokofiev 1, Lalo Symphonie Espagnole with Joshua Bell and Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances, and this morning woodwinds got to see an open rehearsal of select orchestral masterworks led by William R. Langley for the upcoming Students @ The Symphony concert series.
