This past weekend, Georgia CTSA's Integrating Special Populations team collaborated with faith leaders in Hawkinsville, GA to host a Community Health Advocate training on diabetes. We aim to empower community leaders to educate and link their members to health services in an effort to improve health outcomes in rural areas of Georgia. We look forward to more trainings & collaborations in the new year!

Did You Know? While both black and white women get breast cancer at approximately the same rate, studies show that black women die from breast cancer at a 40% higher rate than white women.

In our latest MSM Blog post, Diana Wilson, M.D. F.A.C.O.G., assistant Professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology at MSM, discusses the threat of breast cancer in relation to black women, overall risk factors, and the importance of early detection any time of the year.

MSM to Lead National African American Cancer Research Effort

MSM's Associate Dean for Research, James W. Lillard, Ph.D. recently spoke with HBCU Digest about the school's role in a historic genetic sequencing initiative, which will boost the national archive of medical treatment outcomes by thousands of African American cancer survivors and patients.

Teams from Susan G. Komen Greater Atlanta and Morehouse School of Medicine Cancer Health Equity Institute are working together to develop an action plan to reduce African American breast cancer disparities in Metro Atlanta and beyond. In partnership, we will achieve a deeper impact on our shared goal to eradicate breast cancer.

Last week, the Cancer Health Equity Institute collaborated with GradyHealth to celebrate our community’s cancer survivors, their caregivers, and the amazing team at the Grady Cancer Center for Excellence during Grady's annual Cancer Survivor's Day! We met so many inspiring survivors and had the pleasure of sharing in their singing/dancing/comedic talents during the pageant!

This Sunday, June 2 is National Cancer Survivors Day! Be on the look out for NCSD activities going on in and around Atlanta this weekend to recognize and celebrate the cancer survivors in our community!

The Cancer Health Equity Institute is partnering with the Georgia Cancer Center Grady Hospital to hold our own celebration later in June, so stayed tuned :)

Many thanks to Dr. Ömer Küçük for spending the day with MSM cancer faculty, researchers, and students!

We learned so much about the importance of combining standard and integrative approaches to treating cancer. Using chemotherapy and radiation WITH methods such as yogic practice and nutritional components, like soy isoflavones, can have immense benefits for cancer patients.
