As director of The EMPOWER Lab at Georgia State University, psychology professor Dr. Isha Metzger is dedicated to advancing research on the impact of racial trauma on mental health. Her team's work aims to reduce mental health disparities through increased engagement in treatment, community outreach, education, training, and research with a focus on the Black community.

Recently, Dr. Metzger contributed her expertise on a panel at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C., and was published in Psychology Today, addressing the intersection of racial violence, historical trauma, and the importance of thorough investigation. Congratulations to Dr. Hang Shi, Associate Chair of the Biology Department at Georgia State, who has been awarded a $3.46 million, five-year NIH grant to research how nerves in the body burn energy to regulate fat and metabolism—work that could lead to new solutions for improving metabolic health.

Co-principal investigator on the grant is Distinguished University Professor of Biology Dr. Bingzhong Xue.
