Thumbprint Studio-Saturday Art School- welcomed over 60 artists this morning, aged Kindergarten-Grade 5. Art Education students from Oakland University, studying to become art teachers, have the opportunity to observe, teach, support, and reflect on their future teaching practice under the guidance of their university professor (Nancy Taylor) and Thumbprint Studio’s incredible master teacher and mentor, Kelley Marie. Thumbprint Studio-Saturday Art School- welcomed over 60 artists this morning, aged Kindergarten-Grade 5. Art Education students from Oakland University, studying to become art teachers, have the opportunity to observe, teach, support, and reflect on their future teaching practice under the guidance of their university professor (Nancy Taylor) and Thumbprint Studio’s incredible master teacher and mentor, Kelley Marie. We spent the day setting up the “Grizz Room” at Deerfield Elementary, Avondale Schools. Oakland University students will be learning methods of teaching and assessing Reading, Science, and English Language Arts, Classroom Management, and Instructional Design, all through the amazing Avondale/OU Partnership/collaboration. Children at Deerfield, Woodland, and Graham Elementary Schools (each hosting OU classes) will also receive additional learning support from these young educators, university faculty and teaching staff will collaborate, and many exciting opportunities will be offered throughout the year! A special thank you to the staff at Auburn and Graham Elementary Schools, Avondale Schools, for hosting the first five years of OU classes, and helping to set a firm foundation for this collaborative partnership. Special Announcement: The Avondale/Oakland University continues to expand across the Avondale School District! During the 2018-19 school year, preservice teachers will have the opportunity to take elementary education method courses at Deerfield, Woodland, and Graham Elementary Schools. An OUWB Medical School student will be partnering with Mr.Shawn Kilburn at Auburn Elementary, studying heart health and wellness. We are looking forward to collaborating with the university and providing meaningful learning opportunities across the district to Avondale’s students.

Students from OU have been learning about classroom management, instructional design, and assessments as they take part in classes that are taught each day at Graham Elementary School. Today, students used Visible Thinking Routines to problem solve ways in which they could help their school community. Thanks to the amazing staff at Graham for mentoring these future educators and demonstrating what outstanding teaching looks and sounds like!

Our first ever “Bee a Reader” Literacy event was a huge success! Thank you to the many future teachers from Oakland University that shared great books and guided Avondale’s youngest readers through many fun learning stations. There was even pound cake and fresh fruit served! The parents enjoyed listened to Dr.Mary Bigler’s keynote address, “Raising Readers.”
Thank you to Dr Jason Moore, Dr. Tanya Christ, Annette McAvoy, Bonnie Kakuda, and members of Avondale Literacy Boosters, Ann Celine Wydeven and Sandi Tabacchi. The event was sponsored by The Avondale Education Foundation through a Dade to Dream Grant written by Marcia Hudson.

Fifth grade students from the Avondale School District were invited to take part in an essay contest that centered on the popular children’s book “Wonder.” Dr.Jon Margerum-Leys, Dean of the School Of Education and Human Services and Dr.James Schwarz, Avondale Schools Superintendent, joined Dr. Linda Pavonetti in honoring these young writers at a recent celebration, held in the ERL, Pawley Hall, Oakland University. 63 young elementary-aged artists are having an amazing experience as they are exploring the works of artists and their techniques as they participates in Thumbprint Studio/ Saturday Art School, a new collaboration of the Avondale/Oakland University Partnership. Sixty three children from the Avondale School District participate in hour long studio sessions every Saturday. Students from Oakland University, studying to become Art Educators, serve as teachers and mentors each session. Kelley Folger, teacher leader and art educator extraordinaire, leads and guides the sessions, mentoring and advising the preservice educators. Memorial founding, donated to the Avondale Foundation, along with money donated to the Oakland University Foundation, is underwriting this experience.So grateful for the extraordinary visioning of this project by Dr. Linda Tyson and Marcia Hudson, Avondale/ OU Partnership teacher leader.
