TAPPI Student Chapter Kick Off Meeting

At our TAPPI Student Chapter Kick Off Meeting, International Paper hosted and presented on their company. It was an amazing start to this semester and welcome to all our scholarship students and new members of our TAPPI student chapter.

We would like to thank International Paper, specifically: Maggie McCoy Hassani, Mandy Ledkins, and LeeAnne Adams for the wonderful presentation on IP, interviewing tips, and for the food and generous donation to our chapter. Our president Sophia Halstead shared her experience this past summer with International Paper as an Intern in the Finished Products department at their Prattville Mill. Also, our vice president Gavin Knight presented on our TAPPI Student Chapter to all the new students.

We also want to thank Naomi Gehling, Dr. Jiang, and Dr. Josephson who all play key roles in our TAPPI Student Chapter and for the students in the Pulp and Paper program. Also, a special thanks to Jennifer Foster who presented the Pulp and Paper Scholarship Program.

We had a very successful start to the semester and hope to continue to see so many new students at our future meetings.

⚙️ Engineered Experience: Auburn in Action

Where our students turn knowledge into real-world impact

On the job at International Paper in Pensacola, Florida…

Austin Diaz is gaining hands-on experience as a Reliability Engineering Intern, supporting paper machine operations and finished product rolls.

He’s learning how to troubleshoot equipment, understand the role of different rolls in the process, and help reduce downtime after failures—which is key to keeping mills running efficiently.

👉 A highlight of his summer? Visiting a roll shop to inspect damaged equipment and learn how different rolls are used across the mill!

⚙️ His work is helping improve reliability, reduce downtime, and support overall mill performance.

👏 Thank you to International Paper for this incredible opportunity!

Engineered Experience: Auburn in Action

Where our students turn knowledge into real-world impact

🟠 On the job at Yates Engineers in Birmingham, Alabama...

Meet Ocean Chen, a Chemical Engineering student working as a Process Engineering Intern at supporting projects across the pulp and paper industry.

Ocean’s experience spans reviewing and editing P&IDs and PFDs, checking flow balance and drainage calculations, and contributing to project teams developing company specifications. He’s also gaining exposure to how process, mechanical, and design teams collaborate to move projects from concept to approval.

Through hands-on work and independent learning, Ocean is building skills in industry tools like Bluebeam Revu and WINGEM while deepening his understanding of pumps, process systems, and engineering workflows.

⚙️ Supporting projects that help mills meet production, cost, and regulatory goals, Ocean is gaining valuable insight into how engineering firms partner with pulp & paper operations to drive success.

👏 Shoutout to Gary Brown, Alex Hilley, Daniel Nesmith, and Keith Shuttlesworth for their mentorship and support!
