Dr. Santos’ research revolves around Halocaridina rubra, a Hawaiian red shrimp, and he is currently studying how new habitats change over time. Dr. Santos began his research when he joined Auburn University’s faculty in 2004. He was inspired by his upbringing in Hawaii and his desire to learn more about the species. He now gets to use his scientific training to answer the questions he had as a child!

Dr. Santos’ lab currently has several tanks of H. rubra, each separated according to collection site and containing roughly 300-400 shrimp. The species is naturally found living in water underground, so they survive with minimal input. From research, Dr. Santos has discovered distinct genetic traits in each tank. The lab collected shrimp last in 2016, and it received funding from The National Science Foundation in April 2020 to further its research. Dr. Santos’ plans to collect more shrimp have been halted because of the pandemic, but collaborators in Hawaii are currently helping with sampling to keep the project running!

Dr. Santos has a jar in his office that contains some H. rubra that he collected in 1999! It’s followed him throughout his professional career, and the shrimp are still thriving in their sealed environment.

We’re excited to start sharing DBS Features to spotlight different people in the department! Kicking things off, we have Dr. Scott Santos!

Dr. Santos is the DBS Chair, and, in a typical year, he also teaches classes. This year, he’s focusing on keeping the department running smoothly in the pandemic. Dr. Santos is originally from Hawaii! He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Hawaii, his PhD from the University at Buffalo, and his post doc from the University of Arizona before coming to Auburn in 2004.

We’ll share more about Dr. Santos and his research over the next few days, so stay tuned!

DBS Chair Dr. Santos is encouraging everyone at Auburn University to participate in sentinel testing! Here’s what he had to say about the program!

“Although you might have heard not-so-flattering stories when it comes to COVID-19 testing, most of the details are an over exaggeration. The relatively minor inconvenience of finding time for sentinel testing is a small investment for the major benefits it brings to students, staff and faculty, their families, friends, the community and the state of Alabama. Everyone should take advantage of AU’s sentinel testing program since, along with masking and vaccinations, these simple but effective tools will allow the Auburn family a much quicker return to the normalcy we all crave.”

We always enjoy partnering with other educational venues. On display now through May 30th at the Jule Collins Museum, you can explore Audubon's etchings juxtaposed alongside actual specimens from the John D. Freeman Herbarium at Auburn’s Museum of Natural History.

This week we will be sharing research highlights from PHD student, Megan Maloney. Be sure to check back daily to see her progress!

Hi my name is Megan, I am a first year Ph.D. student in DBS! One of the focuses of my research is how organisms respond to environmental change; despite their sting–y tendencies, jellyfish are a great system to study this. One cool thing about the jellies I study, formally named Cassiopea but informally named the upside-down jelly, is that they have a symbiotic relationship with algae. This makes them both fascinating to study because of their similarities to corals, but also on a molecular level how Cassiopea are thriving during change while their coral cousins are declining. Follow me as I navigate a Ph.D., a pandemic, and a pretty cool animal!
