The College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM) at Auburn University provides a proven path for students to pursue rewarding careers through five departments - biology, chemistry and biochemistry, geosciences, mathematics and statistics, and physics. OUR HISTORY…
While sciences and mathematics have existed in the educational framework of Auburn University since its beginning as East Alabama Male College in 1856, it was not until 1986 that those disciplines were officially brought together as the College of Sciences and Mathematics, often referred to as "COSAM." The change began with the plan of then-President James Martin to “make Auburn University a major national university.” He called particular attention to the need for Auburn to respond to emerging fields to address the educational expectations of future students and the research frontiers where sciences and mathematics were the focal point. The answer was to create the College of Sciences and Mathematics by combining the following departments:

From the College of Agriculture:
Department of Botany and Microbiology
Department of Zoology and Wildlife Sciences

From the School of Arts and Sciences:
Forestry and Biological Sciences
Department of Chemistry, Physics, and Geology
Division of Mathematics

Altered by a few changes since 1986, the College is now composed of the following 5 departments:

Biological Sciences
Chemistry and Biochemistry
Geosciences
Mathematics and Statistics
Physics

Stronger health care starts with stronger communities.

Auburn is working to address the shortage of medical laboratory scientists in rural Alabama through a $15.3 million award supporting rural health care. This initiative will help expand training opportunities for students and prepare more professionals to support patient care across the state.

Auburn COSAM Associate Professor Cissy Ballen is exploring how role models can shape the future of science! Through her research, Ballen is investigating how relatable scientist role models influence students’ confidence, interest in STEM, and goals for pursuing science careers.

With a four-year, $1.2 million National Science Foundation grant, Ballen and her collaborators hope to better understand how to help more students see themselves as future scientists.

Did you know? The purple sea urchin has more than 200 Toll-like receptors, compared to about 10 in humans!

Researchers in Auburn’s College of Sciences and Mathematics are studying sea urchins, sea stars and jellyfish to better understand how immune systems work across the animal kingdom. Their discoveries could provide new insights into human health, disease resistance and the evolution of immunity.

A look back at some Geo Explorer fun!

Auburn University’s Geo Explorer team was selected as one of 50 teams nationwide for the inaugural NSF FINDERS FOUNDRY program, which supports collaboration to improve educational technology.

With this support, Department of Geosciences Chair Timothy Hawthorne and research associate Dustin Braden are developing TerraBot, an AI tool designed to help Alabama teachers find reliable, standards-aligned Earth science resources.

Different perspectives. One shared question. Big possibilities for biomedical research.

Four Auburn Biological Sciences faculty members—Adriana Avila-Flores, Wendy Hood, Beth Schwartz and Tonia Schwartz—are bringing together nanomedicine, evolutionary physiology, immunology and genomics to explore how biological variation may influence responses to emerging therapies.

Through an NIH-funded collaboration, the team is investigating how genetic and biological diversity can help researchers better understand therapeutic responses—and involving Auburn undergraduate students along the way.

This is what happens when different areas of science come together to ask better questions and push discovery forward.
