🌱 What if plants had superpowers?

To most people, plants seem silent and still. But according to Auburn Chemical Engineering’s Dr. Jean-Francois Louf, they are constantly sensing, communicating, adapting, and defending themselves in remarkable ways.

His new children's book, Plant Superpowers: Discover the Amazing Secrets of the Plant Kingdom, transforms cutting-edge science into an adventure of curiosity, discovery, and hands-on learning. Through comics, experiments, and interactive challenges, young readers can uncover the hidden world of plants and see nature through an entirely new lens.

By inspiring the next generation to ask questions, explore, and see the world differently, Dr. Louf is helping cultivate a lifelong love of science. Join us in congratulating him on this exciting publication and his continued commitment to STEM education and outreach! 🌿📚👏

We are excited to welcome Dr. Georgios Tseropoulos to our faculty in January 2027!

Dr. Tseropoulos’ research sits at the intersection of biomaterials, mechanobiology and inflammation. His lab will investigate how human cells communicate through extracellular vesicles and respond to complex inflammatory microenvironments, with the goal of uncovering fundamental mechanisms that drive tissue dysfunction, disease progression, and regeneration.

Research in the Tseropoulos Lab will span several interconnected areas, including:
❤️ Cardiovascular disease and aortic valve stenosis, investigating how mechanical and inflammatory signals regulate valvular cell behavior and identifying new strategies to modulate pathological tissue remodeling.
🧠 Neuroengineering and neuroinflammation, studying cell-cell communication within inflammatory neural environments and how these interactions contribute to Alzheimer’s disease and nerve repair.

Learn more about Dr. Tseropoulos’ research at tseropouloslab.com. He will hire two graduate students to join his lab as it launches at Auburn University in January 2027.

Auburn Chemical Engineering graduating senior Nicole Teper spent her second summer as an engineering intern with James Hardie, where she tackled projects with real-world impact.

Last summer, Nicole developed a particle size analyzer test method that reduced testing time from two hours to just one minute. This summer, she built a linear regression model to improve product testing and had the opportunity to see her previous project come full circle when James Hardie implemented her test method at its Plant City facility.

Trusted to help commission the equipment and train employees on the process she created, Nicole experienced what every engineer hopes for: seeing their work make a lasting difference. Along the way, she strengthened her skills in data analysis, statistics, process improvement, and problem-solving while gaining hands-on experience across plant operations.

"Seeing my project implemented and knowing the company trusted my work enough to use it was incredibly rewarding," Nicole said.

We're so proud to see Nicole applying her Auburn Chemical Engineering education to solve real industry challenges! War Eagle!

Once a graduate student in Auburn University Chemical Engineering, Dr. Nicole Habbit now serves as a lecturer in the department, helping prepare the next generation of engineers for their own careers and opportunities. After earning her M.S. in 2018 and Ph.D. in 2022, Dr. Habbit's experiences in research, education, and interdisciplinary collaboration positioned her to make an impact both in the classroom and in the future of engineering education at Auburn University.

Reflecting on where her Auburn education has taken her, Dr. Habbit shared:
"Today, I have the privilege of serving as a lecturer at Auburn, where I teach the fundamentals of chemical engineering and the problem-solving mindset that empower our students to tackle complex challenges and ultimately launch successful careers. Simultaneously, I have had the opportunity to help design and develop Auburn’s new Biomedical Engineering graduate programs and curriculum. The versatility of my chemical engineering education provided the foundation to seamlessly integrate engineering and medicine, enabling me to create brand new pathways for the next generation of Auburn engineers to pursue careers dedicated to improving human health and quality of life."

One of the most rewarding aspects of her role is watching students discover that a chemical engineering degree can open doors far beyond traditional career paths, equipping them to pursue meaningful work wherever they can make the greatest impact.

We are proud to see where an Auburn University Chemical Engineering degree has taken Dr. Nicole Habbit and how she is helping shape the future of engineering education and healthcare innovation. War Eagle, Dr. Habbit!
