Meet Paul Mortimer, better known as the British Auburn Fan.

Originally from northwest England near Manchester, Paul discovered college football nearly 13 years ago while searching for something to watch on TV. The game he stumbled upon? The iconic 2013 Kick Six. From that moment, he was an Auburn fan.

Paul first visited Auburn in 2023, marking the 10th anniversary of the game that started it all. Since then, he’s made the trip across the pond to cheer on the Tigers twice, but he’s still waiting to witness an Auburn victory in person. This weekend, he’s hoping the LSU matchup will finally bring the win he’s been waiting to experience.

While in town, we had the pleasure of welcoming Paul to the Tony and Libba Rane Culinary Science Center. From touring the culinary and pastry labs and connecting with our amazing faculty to taking in the incredible rooftop views of Jordan-Hare Stadium and Samford Hall, we enjoyed allowing him to discover another side of Auburn beyond the football field. As Paul puts it, sports may have drawn him to Auburn, but it’s the people who make him love it. 🧡

What a great evening at our Bourbon & Blues event! 🥃🎶

Hosted at the Tony and Libba Rane Culinary Science Center, the event offered an entertaining, educational look at Blue Note Bourbon's history and the art of bourbon-making.

Born in Kentucky and raised in Memphis, B.R. Distilling Co. blends Kentucky bourbon heritage with the grit, heat, and soul of Memphis. By aging its wh***ey in the South’s heat and humidity, the distillery creates rich color and distinctive flavors that reflect the character of the Bluff City.

Guests enjoyed a guided tasting of Blue Note’s award-winning bourbons and rye wh***ey while learning about the craftsmanship and Memphis music culture behind each expression.

Where Brewing Expertise Meets Research and Innovation! 🍺

Meet Caroline Shubert, a Ph.D. student at Auburn University’s Horst Schulze School of Hospitality Management, who brings together her passion for brewing and academic research to explore innovation in the beverage industry.

As both a brewer and an emerging scholar, Caroline combines hands-on industry expertise with scientific inquiry, examining the relationship between brewing science, consumer behavior, and emerging technologies. From October 12–16, Caroline led a series of b**r sensory evaluation sessions to advance her doctoral research, supported by interdisciplinary collaboration with colleagues in Food Science.

At the Horst Schulze School of Hospitality Management, we are committed to supporting interdisciplinary collaboration and empowering graduate students to pursue innovative, industry-relevant research that bridges science and industry practice.

From the scenic vineyards of Oregon’s Willamette Valley to unforgettable dining experiences, this year’s Horst Schulze School of Hospitality Management Oregon Study Tour gave 12 students an inside look at the art of hospitality.

Students explored renowned wineries, enjoyed exclusive tastings, connected with alumni, and learned from industry professionals along the way. From hands-on experiences to memorable meals, every stop offered a new opportunity to learn and grow.

A heartfelt thank you to the wineries, restaurants, hotels, alumni, and generous donors who made this experience possible. We are grateful for the hospitality and support you continue to share with our students!

Recently, our Hospitality Facilities Management class welcomed Chris Anderson, Director of the AAA Diamond Program, and his team to learn about their extensive hotel inspection process, including cleanliness standards and ATP (adenosine triphosphate) testing devices to measure microscopic cleanliness.

Students put their knowledge into practice at The Laurel Hotel & Spa, Alabama's first and only AAA Five Diamond Hotel. Students performed ATP testing by swabbing various room surfaces to assess cleanliness and experienced firsthand what a typical AAA hotel inspection looks like.
