Auburn University’s Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) Student Chapter celebrated big wins at the ITE International Meeting!

Md Roknuzzaman and Nsong Ernest Asiedu earned Third Place in the FHWA Excellence in Highway Safety Data Award, while Md Roknuzzaman also received the Daniel B. Fambro Student Paper Award from ITE International.

Reflecting on the achievement, Roknuzzaman shared, "Who would have thought a class term paper would take us this far? This award reminds me that even a small research idea can grow into something meaningful, especially when you have a great teammate and a supportive professor [Dr. Huaguo Zhou]."

These award-winning projects focused on motorcycle crash severity and pedestrian safety, highlighting how research can drive real-world transportation solutions. Congratulations to our students for representing Auburn University's Civil & Environmental Engineering and advancing safer roadways for everyone.

✨The Co-Op/Internship Series✨

For Cameron Vines, a senior in Civil and Environmental Engineering, a co-op with Alabama Power has been an opportunity to put engineering into practice and gain valuable experience beyond the classroom.

During her first rotation with the Underground Network group in Birmingham, Cameron had the opportunity to work on switchgears used for UAB Women and Infants Hospital.

Starting Spring 2027, Cameron will transition to Distribution Engineering in Auburn. She is looking forward to expanding her technical skills and gaining a broader understanding of the electric utility industry.

Looking ahead, she hopes to continue developing as both an engineer and a leader while contributing to projects that positively impact the communities she serves.

✨The Co-Op/Internship Series✨
Meet Liliana Tarud, a senior in Civil & Environmental Engineering, who is gaining hands-on industry experience as a Preconstruction Intern for Hoar Construction in Orlando, Florida.

Liliana has had the opportunity to contribute to projects for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and Simon Malls. These experiences have helped her gain a deeper understanding of the many steps that take place before construction begins and the important role preconstruction plays in setting projects up for success.

One of Liliana’s biggest takeaways has been learning about different approaches to the bidding process, including the differences between hard bidding and negotiated projects. She has also expanded her knowledge of construction terminology and gained insight into the many strategies and considerations that go into planning a project before work begins.

Looking ahead, Liliana hopes to work on large-scale projects, such as resorts and skyscrapers!

🌟 Undergraduate Research Assistant Spotlight: Mindy Tran 🌟
From Clanton, Alabama, to gaining hands-on experience in transportation engineering, stormwater and pavement research, Mindy Tran has built an impressive foundation for a career in the transportation industry.

🎓 A senior in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Auburn University, Mindy has combined coursework, research, and industry experience to prepare for the next step in her career. Her internship experiences include working with ALDOT on a roadway paving and widening project and supporting the traffic and roadway design team at Pape-Dawson in Nashville, Tennessee. Following graduation, she will return to Nashville to join Pape-Dawson's transportation team full-time.

🛣️ As an Undergraduate Research Assistant at the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) for nearly two years, Mindy has played an important role in collecting and processing data from asphalt strain gauges (ASGs) at the NCAT Test Track. The data she gathers helps researchers evaluate how asphalt pavement responds to changing temperatures, traffic loading, and long-term performance.

🌧️ In addition to her work with NCAT, Mindy previously worked at the Auburn Stormwater Research Facility, where she assisted graduate students in conducting Turbidity and Total Suspended Solids (TSS) testing to evaluate water quality and stormwater management practices.

🌟 Undergraduate Research Assistant Spotlight: Katelyn Rebrook 🌟

From conducting post-disaster damage assessments to developing advanced simulations of windstorm impacts, Katelyn Rebrook is helping advance research that can improve the resilience of residential structures against extreme weather.

🏠 As an Undergraduate Research Assistant, Katelyn worked under Dr. David Roueche, collaborating with Ph.D. candidate Daniel Yahya on research sponsored by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS). In this role, she performed data analysis and damage identification on residential structures across targeted post-disaster study areas, helping researchers better understand the effects of severe weather on the built environment.

🌪️ Currently, Katelyn serves as a 2026-2027 Undergraduate Research Fellow under Dr. Roueche's mentorship. Her project, Evaluating the Influence of Local Spatial Patterns and Garage Door Orientation on Windstorm Performance, examines how neighborhood layouts and garage door orientation can influence roof failures during tornadoes and hurricanes.

🔬 Through her research, Katelyn is compiling storm imagery from past wind events into a centralized database to identify damage patterns and structural failure mechanisms. She is also developing and validating time-step simulations to evaluate how localized factors contribute to residential failure rates, with the goal of improving our understanding of windstorm performance and supporting more resilient residential design strategies.

🌎 By combining real-world observations with advanced modeling techniques, Katelyn's work is helping provide valuable insights that can inform future mitigation efforts and strengthen communities against severe weather.

🌟 Undergraduate Research Assistant Spotlight: Candace Bardwell 🌟
From Madison, Alabama, to Auburn’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Candace Bardwell is making an impact both in and out of the classroom through research, service, and campus involvement.

🎓 A sophomore in Civil and Environmental Engineering, Candace is actively involved in Engineers Without Borders' Bolivia Team and enjoys competing in intramural sports while pursuing her passion for engineering.

🌧️ As an Undergraduate Research Assistant at the Auburn Stormwater Research Facility, Candace contributes to both laboratory and full-scale field testing focused on erosion and sediment control. In the lab, she analyzes water quality samples by evaluating total suspended solids (TSS), turbidity, pH, and conductivity to help assess stormwater treatment performance.

🚜 Out in the field, Candace works hands-on with large-scale stormwater testing operations. Her responsibilities include assisting graduate researchers with test setup, data collection, and teardown activities for projects involving slope drains, mulch berms, skimmer sediment basins, and silt fences. She has also gained valuable experience maintaining rainfall simulator equipment used to evaluate real-world runoff management solutions.

🌎 Through her research, Candace is helping advance innovative stormwater management practices while gaining practical experience that bridges classroom learning with real-world environmental challenges.

🎉Congratulations to Dr. Jose G. Vasconcelos on being awarded an NSF grant for his collaborative research project, “Enabling Safe and Efficient Restoration of Drinking Water Systems through Multiphase Flow Modeling and Control.”

The project tackles an important challenge facing drinking water systems: how to safely and efficiently refill empty water mains following repairs, new installations or community expansion. By advancing our understanding of how water and trapped air interact during this process, the research aims to help make water system restoration faster, safer and more economical.

👏 Congratulations, Dr. Vasconcelos!
