Some of the most important work we do at Auburn University Marine Extension and Research Center and our AU Shellfish Lab isn't just about harvesting oysters. It's about creating a safer ecosystem for oysters to thrive where their biggest threat also exists: the oyster drill.

The oyster drill is a snail that consumes oysters by drilling through the shell into their soft tissue and consuming it. Our work is focused on limiting the detrimental impact of drills on our oyster reefs along the coast.

That means staying connected to our local farmers, creating defense strategies, and constantly tracking the environments where drills and young oysters interact.

Our work doesn't just stop in Auburn. It extends all the way down to the coast at Auburn University Marine Extension and Research Center. Through the Alabama Extension Alabama Extension Water, we play a leading role in not just providing the oysters that end up on your table, but the state’s oyster reef restoration, strengthening marine habitats, improving water quality, and supporting coastal economies and ecosystems.

SFAAS welcomed Ambassador Blanchard U.S. Mission to the UN in Rome as she returned to her alma mater, Auburn University Auburn University, not just as a proud alumna, but as the U.S. Ambassador to the Rome-based UN food and agriculture agencies. *picture in comments*
