It's hatching time! This was some our students' first times getting hands-on experience with fish reproduction and early life care. New eggs means the chance to learn more about the cycle of life and how to support aquaculture research in areas like fish health, nutrition, genetics and production systems.

Today was a fun and educational day with at the .fishfarm, sharing the Shell Center with the Auburn High School aquaculture class. A unique grant project allowed them to collaborate with Auburn University’s USAS program. SFAAS is looking forward to sharing this time again in the future!

What many don’t know is that some hybrid catfish are growing too large too fast, which cuts into local farm profits.

How? Oversized fish eat feed, prey on smaller fish, and are worth significantly less at processing.

Alabama producers are taking this hit and Auburn is trying to solve this problem through research and outreach, studying the fish and working directly with farmers to test practical solutions. SFAAS is not just describing an issue. Together, Alabama’s catfish industry is working to eliminate one of its most expensive production challenges for all.

SFAAS' Dr. Andrew Rypel's comments here are a reminder that aquatic systems demand nuance. Decisions about hybridization and nonnative fish populations can affect ecosystem health, native species, and long-term outcomes. That's why SFAAS work matters.

Introduced species can wreak havoc on native ecosystems. Many states are flooding their waterways with them.

Served raw, grilled, or fried, oysters are a favorite for seafood lovers across Alabama, from the Gulf Coast to inland cities. Beyond the plate, oysters play a critical role in protecting and restoring Alabama’s coastal ecosystem.

Through research, restoration, and community engagement, Alabama Extension at Auburn University is playing a leading role in rebuilding the state’s oyster reefs, turning discarded shells into a powerful conservation tool that strengthens marine habitat, improves water quality, and supports coastal economies.
