The Augusta University School of Public Health is kicking off the new academic year with nearly 300 students, marking more than 150% growth in enrollment since the school’s creation in 2023.

Students, faculty and staff gathered for the annual Welcome Back and Orientation Event to connect, share their public health interests and learn more about resources available to support their success. With continued growth in its academic community, SPH remains focused on preparing future public health leaders and addressing Georgia’s public health challenges through education, research and community partnerships.

Why does the U.S. health system continue to underperform despite high levels of spending?

School of Public Health Dean Teresa Waters, PhD, was cited twice in a new National Academy of Medicine discussion paper that explores how misaligned financial incentives shape system performance and what can be done to address them. The authors identify key structural drivers and outline a set of policy levers that could better align financing with outcomes, prevention and accessibility.

We're proud to announce that E. Andrew Balas, MD, PhD, a professor in the Department of Health Management, Economics, and Policy within the School of Public Health, has received a $2.5 million R01 grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to identify how research errors arise, spread and affect scientific progress and develop practical tools to prevent them.

Biomedical research is facing a reproducibility crisis, with major scientific journals estimating more than 80% of published biomedical research is negatively affected by various defects, resulting in findings that are non-reproducible and useless.

“It’s a very timely topic because two or three years ago, it was not very commonly considered or recognized that there is this huge problem with wasted research that is either flawed or defective,” said Balas, the principal investigator of the study.

He will work with Wendy Burnett, PhD, an assistant professor at AUSPH; Melissa Powell, a professor at Augusta University Pamplin College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences; and Peter Elkin, PhD, a professor and chair in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo on the five year-study.

Jie Chen, PhD, has been named a 2026 Provost Fellow for Augusta University!

Chen is one of five AU faculty members selected for the fellowship out of 19 outstanding applicants.

The fellowship fosters faculty collaboration on strategic initiatives, promotes interdisciplinary projects that strengthen the university community and provides fellows with opportunities to further develop their leadership skills, advance their professional growth and prepare for future leadership roles.

Chen currently serves as a professor of biostatistics in the Department of Biostatistics, Data Science and Epidemiology and associate dean for academic and student affairs for the School of Public Health.

Her research focuses on statistical change point analysis, model selection criteria, statistics in bioinformatics, biostatistics, statistical modeling of high-throughput genomic and biomedical data, high-dimensional inference and Bayesian inference.

During her fellowship, Chen will collaborate with faculty, administrators and staff to evaluate the effectiveness of current course evaluation practices, refine the current evaluation instrument, review student response patterns and strengthen student participation rates.

Faculty and staff from the Augusta University School of Public Health Disaster Health Sciences Collaborative recently supported Operation Centennial Surge, a full-scale exercise conducted August 19 at Emory University Hospital Midtown on behalf of the SRDRS - Southern Regional Disaster Response System.

The exercise provided EUHM an opportunity to operationalize its plans, policies and procedures in a realistic environment. Led by Curt Harris, PhD, and Paul Link, this work reflects the continued growth of disaster health sciences as an emerging area of expertise and engagement within AUSPH, connecting faculty expertise with healthcare and community partners to strengthen preparedness and response.

Experiences like Operation Centennial Surge demonstrate the important role of academic and healthcare partnerships in building stronger, more resilient health systems and communities.

Dr. Gao is an assistant professor in the Department of Biostatistics, Data Science and, Epidemiology.

Dr. Brewe is an assistant professor in the Department of Community and Behavioral Health Sciences.

Dr. Ahmed is a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Biostatistics, Data Science and, Epidemiology.

Each brings unique expertise and passion to our mission of improving health outcomes in Georgia and beyond. We can't wait to see the meaningful contributions they make to our students, our research and the communities we serve.

Happy FDOC! It was also the first day of classes for four of our staff members who are pursuing AU degrees!

📚 Research Operations Manager Katherine Covington started her Doctorate of Philosophy in Applied Health Sciences degree within SPH.

📊 Project Coordinator Amy Szoka started her Master of Public Health degree within SPH.
