Our Summer Scholars arrive next week, and we couldn’t be more excited!

The eight-week IPPH Summer Public Health Scholars Program is a paid internship that provides AU graduate or professional degree students with immersive, hands-on experience in a public health research setting.

This year, we have 14 students who will be paired with faculty mentors and will attend weekly seminars from public health leaders.

Students end up leaving the program with an expanded research portfolio, real-world public health insights and meaningful connections.

Congratulations to Dr. Steven Coughlin on his recent appointment to the Annals of Epidemiology Editorial Board! Annals of Epidemiology is the official journal of the American College of Epidemiology. Dr. Coughlin will begin his three-year term on Monday, June 1. 👏 👏 👏

We’re pleased to announce AUGSPH has been approved for funding from to study the quality of engagement of community research partners, particularly those with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities, including autism. Led by Dr. Teal Benevides and Dr. Stephen Shore, the aim is to validate a measure of research engagement, find out how easy it is to use, and whether the tool is helpful for study teams. Stay tuned for updates as we embark on this important patient-centered research!

SPH faculty Drs. Steven Coughlin and Marlo Vernon, along with Dr. Jennifer Sullivan (Principal Investigator of the AU SFRN - see link in comment below) and other faculty from the Physiology Department at the Medical College of Georgia, participated in a meeting this past Monday at Massachusetts General Brigham hospital in Boston for the American Heart Association's Specialized Focus Research Network (SFRN) on Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic Disease in Women. In addition to investigators from Augusta University, experts from the SFRN Centers at Mass General Hospital and Ohio State University also participated in the meeting.

Last week, the first-ever semester of Jags on Campus ended with a ceremony and a pizza party. Maivy and Sarah were there (in the second row on the left) to celebrate all they learned and accomplished this semester raising awareness about the risks of oral cancer among their fellow students.

Sarah said, "Maivy and I really enjoyed being able to meet people from the school of public health and people making an impact in the community. For me, it helped me think more critically on the type of work I would like to go into and let me see a glimpse of what is involved in community programs and outreach."

Maivy added, "We are proud of our impact in raising awareness on Oral Cancer. I enjoyed the internship as it allowed me to understand and expand my work ethic and research skills. I am used to writing ethnographies, so having the opportunity to work on scientific writing challenged me to expand my skills. Additionally, connecting with our mentors allowed me to understand what I want to pursue in the future, such as community outreach."

"Maivy and Sarah did a terrific job increasing awareness of oral cancer and how to prevent it by avoiding smoking and heavy alcohol consumption, and by getting vaccinated for HPV," said Dr. Steven Coughlin, one of our Jags on Campus mentors in the School of Public Health.
