In 1890 a young Black man from Augusta was standing on a hillside in Greece, digging up a city that had been buried for two thousand years. 🏛️

His name was John Wesley Gilbert. Born around 1863 near Hephzibah, he became the first graduate of Paine College, went on to Brown, and won a place at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens. He worked the excavation at ancient Eretria and drew the map of that city. That makes him the first African American archaeologist, and he did it while this country was busy insisting our people were not capable of that kind of work at all.

Then he came home and taught Greek at Paine for decades, and later traveled to the Congo. A man out of Richmond County read ancient Greek and walked ruins in the Aegean, and most Georgians have never once heard his name. Had you? 📚

VOTE! VOTE! VOTE!

VOTE! VOTE! VOTE!

🗳️ TODAY IS ELECTION DAY: Honoring our past, shaping our future 🗳️

Today, the doors to the polls are open, and the stakes could not be higher. At a time when voting rights face modern challenges and deep debate across our nation, we cannot afford to sit on the sidelines. Your vote is your voice, your power, and your responsibility.

For over 140 years, Paine College has stood as a beacon of social responsibility, leadership, and civil rights. Our history is deeply intertwined with the struggle for equality—from our students marching and holding sit-ins to integrate Augusta’s institutions, to the generations of Paine alumni who fought on the front lines to ensure that the Black community had a seat at the table and a ballot in the box.

The right to vote was not given; it was earned through the sacrifice, resilience, and unyielding courage of those who came before us. When we choose not to vote, we silence the very legacy they fought so hard to build.

Our future—our education, our communities, our rights, and our progress—is determined by those who show up. Let’s carry the torch of justice that Paine College has always held high.

Make your plan. Grab your ID. Check on a friend. Head to the polls. Let's make our voices heard today.

Congratulations 🎉
