Happy Women’s History Month! Each Thursday of this month, we’ve been recognizing special women who have been a part of our school’s history. Next in our series, is @aug_university’s first computer science graduate, Ann Anderson!

Ann Anderson graduated with a degree in math and computer science from Augusta College on June 10, 1979. Little did she know at the time that her computer science degree would take her around the world!

“Some people might have thought it was odd for a woman to get a degree in computer science, but I didn’t think it was unusual because it was exciting. I knew that was where the world was going and I guess I really got started ahead of it.” Anderson said.

While most computer science graduates jobs revolve around coding, Anderson’s career took her in a different direction with telecommunications. Anderson was BellSouth Mobility’s 75th employee in the 1980’s and rose through the ranks as one of BellSouth Mobility’s telecommunication strategists. Her position with BellSouth Mobility led her on her journey around the world, helping set up BellSouth International. Her work with BellSouth International led her to most of South America, Europe, New Zealand and Hong Kong, just to name a few places she’s been to!

Anderson’s family informed Augusta University that she sadly passed away last year. While she was unable to make our computer science program’s 40th anniversary celebration in 2019, we were grateful to capture her story in a special JagWire feature in 2019. ⬇️

https://jagwire.augusta.edu/ann-anderson-augusta-universitys-first-computer-science-graduate-travels-the-globe/

We are proud to recognize a great trailblazer in Ms. Anderson and honor her incredible career. Thank you Ann. 💙

Happy Women’s History Month! Each Thursday of this month we’re recognizing women who have been a part of our school’s history. Next up, is our Girls Who Code volunteer extraordinaire, Lieutenant Colonel Julianna Rodriguez!

Rodriguez played a critical role in the development of AU’s Girls Who Code program, “CodeHoppers”, as our lead volunteer since its founding during the 2016-2017 academic year. Girls Who Code aims to increase diversity and the number of women in computing fields through teaching girls basic coding concepts, principles of web development, and ethics of hacking.

In addition to being our lead volunteer, Rodriguez also serves as the technical leader of the program, developing a substantial part of the technical content of the program.

“The best part [of being involved with the CodeHoppers] has been seeing girls’ faces light up when learning new concepts - ‘lightbulb’ moments - and also to see the creativity and support that our great facilitator volunteers apply to helping the girls.”

Rodriguez was honored last year as @aug_university’s Volunteer of the Year, our university’s highest volunteerism honor, for her work with Girls Who Code.

We are so grateful to Lt. Col. Rodriguez for investing her time and talents into the next generation of women in STEM fields!

We’re honoring some special women affiliated with our school this month on our throwback Thursdays, starting with our Founding Dean Joanne Sexton!

Prior to her arrival at Augusta University, Sexton served our country for 20 years in the United States Navy as an information technology expert, working with hardware maintenance, software development & support, telecommunications services and more. During her service in the Navy, served as the first commanding officer of what is known today as Navy Information Operations Command Georgia.

Sexton founded the Cyber Institute at Augusta University’s School of Computer and Cyber Sciences in 2015 and was named Founding Dean of the School of Computer and Cyber Sciences in 2017. Sexton played a vital role in bringing youth outreach programs to @aug_university to enrich and encourage the K-12 pipeline, including @girlswhocode and the NSA-sponsored GenCyber camps.

Sexton is pictured here with @aug_university President Brooks Keel during a tour of our Summerville Campus Cyber lab. Thank you Joanne for your service to our country and our school!
