Rest in Power, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. ♥️ #AAC_DST

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated mourns the passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. With service in her heart, Justice Ginsburg used the power in her voice to champion gender equality, civil liberties, and pay equity. Though small in stature, she has stood “notoriously” tall in the face of adversity throughout her career. Ruth Bader Ginsburg was an extraordinary woman.

We will keep her legacy alive by walking down the trails she blazed, keeping in mind her words, “Real change, enduring change, happens one step at a time.”

Our prayers are with our member, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms. She, her husband and one of her children are recovering from COVID-19. The former judge and attorney was dubbed the "leader America needs" after her impassioned plea in the wake of chaos on her city's streets.

"I am a mother to four black children in America, one of whom is 18 years old. And when I saw the murder of George Floyd, I hurt like a mother would hurt. And when I heard there were rumors about violent protests in Atlanta, I did what a mother would do. I called my son and I said, 'where are you? I cannot protect you and black boys shouldn't be out today.'"

Soror Bottoms, we salute your continued work on the frontline each and every day and wish you and your family a speedy recovery! #DST1913 #ServiceInOurHeart #DSTFrontline

Today, we salute Augusta Alumnae Chapter Member, Ms. Christine Miller-Betts as she transitions into her retirement as Executive Director of the Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History. She is the first Executive Director of the Museum and has guided it from a tiny house museum in the historic Laney Walker District, to a significant Black History destination in the South. She has served as Executive Director since its opening in 1991, implementing countless community programs, art and history exhibitions, as well as educational projects. A well known and respected pillar of the Augusta Community, Ms. Betts has made a lasting impact on Augusta and created national awareness of the tremendous legacy of Lucy Craft Laney. Help us honor her and congratulate her on a job ‘well done’! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

On June 20, right between the primaries and the conventions, we rise together. Join us at June2020.org!

The Mass Poor People's Assembly & Moral March on Washington is going digital! On June 20th, we will hold the largest digital and social media gathering of poor and low-wealth people, moral and religious leaders, advocates, and people of conscience in this nation’s history. A global pandemic is exposing even more the already existing crisis of systemic racism, poverty, ecological devastation, the war economy and militarism, and the distorted moral narrative of religious nationalism. On June 20, the 140 million poor and low-wealth people across this nation will be heard!

WATCH the broadcasts on the #PoorPeoplesCampaign FB page: FB.com/anewppc & June 20 website: june2020.org

The event will be rebroadcast on June 20th & 21st, at 6PM ET.

‪The increasing urgency of a broad movement led by the poor and most impacted is more apparent every day. Now is the time to organize towards collective action to enact a moral agenda that lifts all people by challenging the interlocking injustices of systemic racism, poverty, militarism, ecological devastation, and the distorted moral narrative that ties it all together.

‪The fact that there are 140 million poor and low-income people in the richest country in the history of the world is morally indefensible, constitutionally inconsistent, and economically disastrous.

*****************

The broadcast on June 20th and June 21st will be interpreted into Spanish and ASL (American Sign Language) and will be open captioned in English.

ASL interpretation will be visible on-screen for the Digital Mass Assembly and March on all digital & TV network platforms.

A second ASL Interpreter only-view live-stream will be available in the Deaf Poor People’s Campaign Facebook group and page showing a larger view of the ASL interpretation.

Open Captioning in English will be available on all digital and TV network platforms.

We are aiming to make June 20th, 2020 as accessible as possible to our entire Poor People’s Campaign family. The Campaign’s leadership nationally and in the state coordinating committees is made up of poor people, clergy and moral leaders, and advocates bringing people together across lines of division.

Our Leadership includes Deaf and Disabled folks as well as leaders who communicate in a number of languages. Speakers on June 20, 2020 will speak to the issues facing poor people in particular who are Deaf and Disabled and point to our demands for disability justice in the Moral Agenda.

This Campaign is built by leaders from the bottom up. We know that we always have more to learn regarding accessibility, disability justice and defeating abilism. If you have any questions or feedback about accessibility on June 20th, 2020 please email us at [email protected].

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. joins in the celebration of #Juneteenth to commemorate June 19, 1865, a date two and a half years after emancipation when our enslaved ancestors in Texas, the most remote “slave-holding” state, were finally informed they were free. As is our way, these African Americans made the best of the situation by turning a confirmation of this nation’s unfair treatment into a celebration of our God-given right to “the pursuit of happiness.” Emancipation Day has been celebrated in Texas ever since.

The holiday born of duplicity and inhumane treatment, now unites a nation in celebration of Black culture and Black achievement. It is a celebration of the fact that Black Lives Matter! #DSTFreedom #DST1913 #SororsInSolidarity

Hello! My name is Dr. Indria Gillespie. I am the founder of Angels In Disguise, nonprofit organization aimed at creating awareness about the bone marrow registry in the Black community. As a Black female and 2-time bone marrow donor to 2 unrelated recipients this health disparity in the Black community became a passion of mine. Many do not know that over 90% of bone marrow matches occur within the same ethnicity. Thus, Blacks match with Blacks. Also, Blacks has a match rate of 23%, which is the lowest of any ethnicity. We must do something. Only we can save ourselves! I am facilitating focus groups online with Black college students between the ages of 18-45 to find out what information they would want in curriculum that would allow them to make an "informed" decision about joining the bone marrow registry. The data collected will be used to develop curriculum to be embedded in Ethnic Studies, Sociology, Social Justice, and health sciences courses at colleges in the Atlanta metro area as a pilot program. If successful, the curriculum would be embedded at all 101 HBCUs and other colleges with high Black populations. I need your help! I need 70 Black students between the ages of 18-45 that attend college in the Atlanta or Augusta areas to attend 1 of 7 planned online focus groups. The online focus group is 2 hours long. We will give each participant a $100 Visa gift card if they attend the entire online focus group. I have attached a flier that has more information and the dates and times of each focus group. Go to www.angels-in-disguise.org/savelives for more information and to register!!! This project is being funded by Be The Match bone marrow registry. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. Thank you! Dr. Indria Gillespie Angels In Disguise www.angels-in-disguise.org
