Our veterans left everything they knew and loved and served with exemplary dedication and courage so we could all know a safer America and a more just world. They have been tested in ways the rest of us may never fully understand.... On Veterans Day, and every day, let us show them the extraordinary gratitude they so rightly deserve...

Congratulations to our Resident of the Month, Brittni Ruble!

Dr. Ruble’s positive attitude, solid clinical performance, and constant professionalism gave her a slight edge over numerous worthy contenders this month. The real winner is likely her dog Barney, as she seems likely to spend her Amazon gift card on some dog toys if he plays his cards right.

Why did you choose Emergency Medicine? I love EM because you see patients of all ages and acuities. You get to help people in critical situations and do procedures, while still having opportunities to educate patients on their new diagnoses or basic health needs🩺💉💊

Why did you choose MCG? I knew right away that MCG was “my fit”. I clicked well with the residents and faculty at my interview, and the program fit the high acuity with a diverse patient population that I was looking for. Bonus points for critical care experience, ultrasound, and being an “academic” program!🤜🤛

What would your superpower be and why? Teleportation so I could see family and friends in the midwest easier🦹‍♀️

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? A teach or a doctor- I hope to serve as both one day!👩‍🏫🧑‍⚕️🩺🥼

What is your favorite breakfast food? All of them! Breakfast is my fave!🥯🍳🧇🥞🥓🥐🍩😋

Coffee to tea? Coffee for sure!☕️☕️☕️

Are you a traveler or a homebody? Traveler✈️🌇🏞🌉🌁🌄🛣

What’s you’re favorite place of all places you have traveled? This is a tough one! I’d say my top 3 places in no particular order are Colorado, the Oregon coast, and Glacier National Park. 🏔🏞

Have you ever completed anything on your “bucket list”? Yes! Skydiving, and I’d 100% do it again!🪂🪂🪂🪂🪂

Why did you choose Emergency Medicine? The Art of the Uncertainty and Unexpected. Fast paced environment with laid-back people, my kind of jam.

Why did you choose MCG? Since I did my rotation here as a Med Student I knew this was the place. The vibes I received from the residents and faculty was superb. Really strong Ultrasound program, they introduced me to the program in an Ultrasound course in my Med School in Peru. 🤙

What Sport would you compete in if you were in the Olympics? Futbol….I mean, the real Futbol(aka soccer)⚽️❤️

Are you a traveler or homebody? Traveler….all the way!✈️🚂🚘🗺⛰🏜🏝🏔🌃

What languages do you know how to speak? English, Spanish, Portuguese, and a bit of German! 🗣🗣🗣🗣

Whats the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given? Only he who risks is free🧐🤔

Introducing Mark Lopez, MD, FAAEM, FACEP

Hometown: Moved around a lot!

Medical School: University of Kansas

Residency: Medical College of Wisconsin

EM Interest: prehospital care especially for children, gangs in the area and their use of the ED, education

Interesting facts about you?I was born in Torrejon, Spain. Son of an airman stationed there and a Spanish mother

What makes Augusta so special? The area has great outdoor resources. It has a very reasonable cost of living. Only couple hours to mountains and beaches
What do you like to do for fun in your spare time? I enjoy cooking for friends and family and traveling. I also like going out on my jet skis on the lake and hiking nearby trails

****What our residents think of Dr. Lopez****
Teaches well, very fun to work with, chill but takes his job and patients' care and resident education seriously. One of the greats in our department.

One of my favorite attendings to work with. He gives you space to make your own decisions but always offers another way to look at a case. Even as a third year, there are a couple of procedures that I haven't 100% mastered, I appreciate that he takes the time to hang around for procedures and give valuable tips and tricks

good with honest feedback, good at teaching procedures in a "hands off but there to help when needed". great music. love that he focuses on the emergency at hand rather than getting bogged down in the weeds like some. one of my favorite attending

appreciate he really listens to resident's plans, williing to try new procedure

Allows resident autonomy appropriate for PGY

One of the best attendings for teaching procedures. Very patient with residents learning how to do something. Not afraid to let residents do less common procedures

Stands out with his straightforward approach and in depth knowledge of illicit drug trade and gangs.

Good balance of oversight and resident autonomy. Efficient

Takes time to discuss treatment plans and considers our input when determining ultimate disposition.

Love every shift with Dr. Lopez, he is a great teacher and also gives me a ton of autonomy without swaying my thought process.

Congratulations to September’s Resident of the Month, Dr. Soham Parikh!!!!Soham narrowly missed being the ROTM in a prior month, but he continued to be a joy to work with on shift. He provided last minute shift relief for another resident who needed to be out of town. Additionally, he organized a much needed wellness day outing at Top Golf. Several faculty have commented on Soham fully embracing the EM3 role running the department, taking great care of sick patients, and teaching the interns and medical students. He’ll receive an amazon gift card, a spot on the quarterly mug, and a chance to be honored by having his face placed on a pillow. A special thanks to him for being such a great team player! #dontmesswiththesoham #emresident #residentofthemonth #emresidency #mcgemresidency #augustauniversity #emergencymedicine #emdocsrock

⭐️Friday Faculty Spotlight⭐️

Introducing our Clerkship Program Director, Dr. Eric Zevallos

Hometown: Coral Springs, Florida

Medical School: University of South Florida

Residency: Medical College of Georgia

EM Interest: Ultrasound, Student and Resident Education

Interesting facts about you? I am half Peruvian and half American; growing up was fun because both parents made sure my siblings and I experienced real Hispanic and Southern American cultures. I grew up in South Florida but decided to move to Augusta for residency because I wanted to help my brother, who at that time was a medical student at MCG. I have an amazing wife who I met during college, a 5 year old son and two Siberian huskies. I love to cook and may have ended up in culinary school had medicine not worked out. I've always loved to teach and the educators (my mentors) at this program and their passion for teaching is really what kept me here after residency.

What makes Augusta so special? Augusta is a fairly large city, but living here you will quickly realize it really has a small city vibe. Over the past few years, the city has seen a lot of growth both in population and industry. It is a perfect city for those that love the outdoors [Waters sports on the river, biking or walking some really beautiful trails, active sports leagues, hunting/fishing, etc). Coming straight from residency, the price of living is hard to beat and the community as a whole tends to offer events year around that help bring those living in Augusta together

What do you like to do for fun in your spare time? A lot of my spare time goes to my 5 year old son! I love to travel, experience different cultures, try new foods and meet people that live completely different than what I do [my goal is to hit all 7 continents]. Every year - I try to take my family to at least one new place in the country and one new place out of the country. I am big into exercise and living a healthy lifestyle. I picked up wood working recently which has been really fun and I do a ton of DIY projects. I've always played basketball and soccer and I try to get out on the river as much as I can, especially during the summer heat.

Introducing our Assistant Program Director, Dr. J.R. Barrett!

Hometown: Martinez, Georgia

Medical School: Medical College of Georgia

Residency: Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia

EM Interest: Education

Interesting facts about you? I was a swimmer in college and a fan of good bourbon. I also like to dive into a good fantasy or sci-fi book

What makes Augusta special? Awesome cost of living, tons of outdoor activities pretty much year round due to the mild winters. Lots of water sports options!

***What our residents think of Dr. Barrett***
Phenomenal teacher, every shift is a great experience in experiencing my own autonomy as well as learning from Dr. Barrett. He has wonderful knowledge and experience but effectively shares it without micromanaging. FANTASTIC attending. A great addition to our program.

Excellent new addition to our program. Teaches community considerations that are generally missed.

Among the best teachers I've encountered. He manages to move the department efficiently while teaching a ton. Always a joy to work with.

Has refreshing/unique approaches to difficult psychosocial cases that I find very educational to get different styles of approaching sometimes difficult encounters

Dr. Barrett is a role model attending and APD. He is thoughtful, inclusive, intelligent, and makes the residents feel more like a significant part of the program. A true asset for all current and upcoming residents

Our first Friday Faculty Spotlight is our amazing Associate Program Director, Dr. Daniel McCollum!

Hometown: Demorest, GA

Medical School: Medical College of Georgia

Residency: Medical College of Georgia

EM Interest: Education and podcasting

Interesting facts about me are: I'm getting into rock climbing, have a very weird taste in music, and enjoy listening to audiobooks at an unsafe speed.

What makes Augusta special: It's got the perfect mix of big city offerings, small town personality of locals, and great outdoors opportunities. Few places have a Level 1 trauma center, amazing restaurants, nice locals, and great wilderness opportunities in one place.

**What our Residents think about Dr. McCollum!**

The dictionary definition of a teacher while still keeping a pulse on department flow. He even starts workups/does notes independently which is incredibly rare. This is who we should all aspire to be as physicians.

Great teacher. I appreciate the level if autonomy he provides while still providing appropriate oversight and guidance. I appreciate how Dan gives you time to formulate a plan and then helps you think it through vs. trying to arrive at an answer as quickly as possible

Appreciate the honest feedback during shift and areas to focus on for improvement

Has a great balance of reassurance and constructive feedback to promote growth.

Huge contributor to the learning in residency and goes way above and beyond to invest in our education. Really appreciate his extra intern lectures of his own time.
