Paine College

Paine College Paine College students can engage in programs and majors offered through the college’s 2 schools, housing 6 departments. Current students collaborate with all types of people to strengthen the community.

Let Paine be your "Gateway to the World". Paine College was founded in 1882 as the result of an unusual collaboration between Black and White Methodists who believed in church-related education as a means of advancement for a newly freed and underserved people. Leaders such as Bishop Lucius Holsey of the Colored (now Christian) Methodist Episcopal Church and Atticus Haygood, a Bishop in the Methodist Episcopal Church South (now United Methodist) worked to establish The Paine Institute to train preachers and teachers to educate the newly freed men and women. In January 1884, classes began in rented quarters at 10th and Broad Streets in Augusta, Georgia. In 1903 Paine Institute was recharted as The Paine College. The College's Tradition of Excellence continues today through present-day students who are forging their way in an ever-changing, fast-paced global community. In an effort to meet the challenge, students engage in an array of activities, including international studies, leadership training, and scholarly activities. Supported by the United Methodist Church, Paine College is a Historically Black, private, church-related, four-year, co-educational college which, through its residential, commuter, and off-site units, strives to develop self-sufficient and productive citizens, committed to intellectual pursuits and aesthetic appreciation in a global society. Since its founding in 1882, Paine College has continued to prepare students for leadership in the local, national, and international communities.

Mission: The Mission of Paine College, a church-related private institution, is to provide a liberal arts education of the highest quality that emphasizes academic excellence, ethical and spiritual values, social responsibility, and personal development to prepare men and women for positions of leadership and service in the African American community, the nation, and the world.

Paine Waives Standardized Tests

Paine College officials announced today that the Institution will waive standardized tests for first-time freshmen. However, students who have taken tests may submit their scores. The decision made by the College is designed to ensure that standards for admission are met while reducing some of the stress applicants and parents are facing during these uncertain times.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the nation's high schools have been disrupted leaving thousands of high school seniors wondering when and if they will be able to take the standardize tests (ACT and SAT) that are required for entry into colleges and universities throughout the country. Many of the spring dates for college admissions tests have been postponed or cancelled due to COVID-19.

Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, Curtis E. Martin, said, "With many high schools closed and teaching remotely, we have decided to ease the anxiety high school seniors are facing amid the pandemic. The test scores are being waived for students with a cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 or better. Seniors who do not have a 3.0 GPA will also be admitted on the condition that they take the ACT Residual test upon enrollment at Paine College."

Applications are being re-evaluated for those who previously applied and submitted satisfactory documentation. Applicants are still required to submit their official transcript and may go online to complete the admissions application at www.Paine.edu (select Admissions drop down menu).

David Jackson, Recruitment Coordinator, said, "If applicants are unable to request official transcripts due to school closures, we encourage students to have their high school counselor email the transcript to [email protected]."

Parents and students are invited to contact the Office of Admissions at (706) 821-8320 with questions regarding the recent changes surrounding the enrollment process. Admissions counselors are standing by to schedule video conferences with parents and students to discuss the status of applications. The College will continue to keep applicants updated via its website at www.paine.edu and social media platforms.
