Paine College students can engage in programs and majors offered through the college’s 2 schools, In 1903 Paine Institute was recharted as The Paine College.

Paine College was founded in 1882 as the result of an unusual collaboration between Black and White Methodists who believed in church-related education as a means of advancement for a newly freed and underserved people. Leaders such as Bishop Lucius Holsey of the Colored (now Christian) Methodist Episcopal Church and Atticus Haygood, a Bishop in the Methodist Episcopal Church South (now United Met

hodist) worked to establish The Paine Institute to train preachers and teachers to educate the newly freed men and women. In January 1884, classes began in rented quarters at 10th and Broad Streets in Augusta, Georgia. The College's Tradition of Excellence continues today through present-day students who are forging their way in an ever-changing, fast-paced global community. In an effort to meet the challenge, students engage in an array of activities, including international studies, leadership training, and scholarly activities. Supported by the United Methodist Church, Paine College is a Historically Black, private, church-related, four-year, co-educational college which, through its residential, commuter, and off-site units, strives to develop self-sufficient and productive citizens, committed to intellectual pursuits and aesthetic appreciation in a global society. Since its founding in 1882, Paine College has continued to prepare students for leadership in the local, national, and international communities.

Today at the HEAL Complex, the Division of Student Success hosted an incredible Protocol PRIDE Forum featuring Crème de la Crème, focusing directly on the power of presence, confidence, and professional presentation. Because at Paine, PRIDE is more than a tradition—it’s how we show up, lead, and represent! 💜🤍 ohhhhhhhh and check out Prez shoe game.

You never know when you’ll run into a fellow Paineite! 💜
Yesterday, Dr. and Mrs. McCorn had the special blessing of meeting and sharing a few words with Ms. Knighton, a beautiful member of the Paine College Class of 1951 while enjoying a meal at one of Augusta’s longtime staples, Harvest Table.
75 years later, the Paine spirit is still shining! 💜
Moments like these remind us that the bonds of Paine College extend far beyond our campus and across generations.

Honoring the Life and Legacy of Senator Charles W. Walker

The Paine College family—including our Board of Trustees, President, administration, faculty, staff, students, and alumni across the nation—joins the Augusta community, the State of Georgia, and our entire country in mourning the passing of a visionary leader, trailblazer, and friend, Senator Charles W. Walker.

Senator Walker’s life was defined by an extraordinary trajectory of purpose, resilience, and unyielding service. Rising to make history as the first African American Majority Leader of the Georgia Senate, he was truly an architect of power, progress, and opportunity. He understood how to bridge communities, build lasting institutions, and champion policies that transformed everyday lives.

His impact directly touched the heart of Paine College. As an instrumental champion of the Georgia HOPE Scholarship, Senator Walker helped build a pathway that opened the doors of higher education to generations of students. Because of his vision, countless young men and women found the financial footing to pursue their dreams, walk the grounds of HBCUs like Paine College, and go on to lead meaningful lives of service.

Beyond the halls of the Capitol, Augusta was always home. Senator Walker invested deeply in the economic, civic, and social fabric of our city, proving that true leadership is rooted in lifting others as you climb. His mentorship, entrepreneurial spirit, and enduring belief in community empowerment left an indelible mark that will resonate for generations.

To the Walker family, we extend our deepest prayers, heartfelt warmth, and sincere condolences during this time of sorrow. We also stand in solidarity with the countless citizens whose lives were touched by his work.

May the legacy of Senator Charles W. Walker continue to inspire us to build, to lead with courage, and to serve our communities with unwavering dedication.

Thank you to everyone who joined us today for Paine College’s Opening Fall Convocation and helped make this special occasion a meaningful start to the 2026–2027 academic year.

We extend our sincere appreciation to our students, faculty, staff, alumni, friends, and community supporters who gathered with us as we officially opened a new year of learning, growth, purpose, and possibility.

A special thank you to Dr. Kendricks D. Ho**er, President of Augusta Technical College , for serving as our distinguished speaker and for sharing an inspiring message with the Paine College family. Your words of encouragement and wisdom were a wonderful way to set the tone for the year ahead.
