Up to 50% of women diagnosed with breast cancer under age 45 are diagnosed within 10 years of childbirth. Known as postpartum breast cancer, this is a more aggressive and often under-recognized form of the disease that affects ~18,000 new mothers each year—but a unique partnership is driving change.

Traci Lyons, PhD, and Ginger Borges, MD, are working together to understand why these cancers behave differently and how to stop them. Their discovery of a key biological driver has led to a potential first-in-class therapy, now being advanced through their startup, Pearl Scientific, with the help of CU Anschutz Innovations. 🔬

The therapy has already shown incredible promise in early-stage studies, not only slowing down the cancer progression but completely killing the cancer cells in animal models. On World Breast Cancer Research Day, we are proud of the life-changing work being done on our campus and with University of Colorado Anschutz Cancer Center.

Researchers at examined data from more than 7,000 pediatric flu hospitalizations across eight influenza seasons, finding that children treated early with the antiviral oseltamivir were less likely to be admitted to the ICU and had shorter hospital stays.

The findings provide some of the strongest real-world evidence to date supporting antiviral treatment for hospitalized children with influenza and reinforce national recommendations to begin treatment as soon as possible.

Years of research, including some of the earliest clinical trials at , have led to a breakthrough in the treatment of advanced bladder cancer.

A new phase 3 study published in The New England Journal of Medicine found that a novel combination therapy improved outcomes for patients with advanced muscle-invasive bladder cancer preparing for surgery. The study followed more than 800 patients at sites worldwide over nearly three years. Nearly 80% of patients who received the combination therapy were alive without their cancer returning two years later, compared with 66% of those who received standard chemotherapy.

CU Anschutz Vice Chancellor for Research Dr. Thomas Flaig, a co-author of the paper, was part of the team that advanced the therapy from its earliest clinical trials to this landmark study that could usher in a new era of care for bladder cancer patients.

For more than 30 years, Jean Kutner, MD, MSPH, distinguished professor of medicine at University of Colorado Anschutz School of Medicine has helped shape the field of palliative care. Now, she is leading the ASCENT Consortium, a nationwide effort to strengthen the evidence behind care for people living with serious illness.

GLP-1 medications have changed the way we think about obesity and weight loss. But these drugs don’t solely affect metabolism and body weight - they also impact the brain. 🧠

researcher Joseph Schacht, PhD, is investigating if GLP-1s can transform the way we treat alcohol use disorder. His clinical trial showed semaglutide medications, like Ozempic and Wegovy, resulted in reduced alcohol consumption and cravings in heavy drinkers, offering hope that new alcohol addiction treatments could be on the horizon.
