Expanding access to care where it’s needed most: CU Anschutz Nursing’s rural midwifery program is helping address maternity care deserts across rural Colorado. For second-year student Martha Menchata, becoming a midwife was personal because she saw the need in her own community and stepped up to meet it. She and program director Denise Smith, PhD, CNM, FACNM, recently shared why this work matters with The Daily Sentinel of Grand Junction.

She just finished her first year of nursing school and is committed to staying in southwest Colorado after graduation, not only to care for her family but also to care for patients in her community.

From patient to nurse, Kari Sutherland’s journey shows how CU Anschutz Nursing’s Fort Lewis program empowers rural students to earn a BSN close to home.

Our future nurses start school NEXT WEEK (šŸŽ‰šŸ˜)– and the excitement is real! Before officially starting their nursing classes, our incoming BS in Nursing students from three local community colleges (Community College of Aurora, Community College of Denver, and Red Rocks Community College) tackled real-world healthcare topics, such as mental health and cancer care, during their final semester of prerequisites. Along the way, they built confidence, strengthened teamwork and communication skills, and even started connecting with their future classmates at CU Anschutz Nursing. We’re looking forward to having them on campus soon!
