The Wells College admissions team is going global! Our international recruitment coordinator, Charlie Harcourt, recently conducted an extensive recruiting trip in Southeast Asia and Nepal, where he met with prospective international students and families at over 30 events.

One highlight of this trip was a fair hosted by Access American Education at the Gia Dinh High School in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, where Charlie is seen here posing with some enthusiastic potential future Wellsians.

This week for Woke Wednesday, students watched "Hello, Privilege. It's Me, Chelsea," a documentary about white privilege from comedian Chelsea Handler. After the film was over, students got the chance to discuss what they saw and how they felt.

The series, hosted each Wednesday evening, is hosted by the Office of Student Equity & Inclusion Initiatives. Previous topics have included toxic masculinity, LatinX/Hispanic culture, and the Confederados of Brazil.

While our students enjoy a much-deserved summer break, it has been anything but restful for our dining hall staff! This summer, Wells and Hallmark Management have commenced work on some eagerly-awaited (and much-needed) renovations to the College's dining hall in Main Building.

When students return next month, they’ll find new bathrooms by the entrance, a “breakfast nook” in the south wing, new flooring, brighter shades of paint in the north and south wings, and a much-improved dishwashing area. (Don’t worry, that beautiful woodwork and the stained glass windows will remain as they are!)

Fun fact: by the time renovations are complete, workers will have gone through 30 gallons of paint and over 65 gallons (!!) of spackle.

We thank Hallmark, which provides dining services to the College, for being such a valuable partner!

“What is book arts? Book arts is life. It is this network of connections that allow one thing to be produced. I believe posters are a very democratic object — anyone can have them, anyone can make them. I believe printing, especially the kind of printing that I do, is very democratic.”*

Those are the words of Amos Paul Kennedy Jr., a printer who specializes in traditional letterpress techniques combined with social commentary. He will be on campus the week of April 15-19 as an artist-in-residence; events include a documentary screening about his life and work, numerous meet-and-greets, and an exhibit of his work.

Last week, the Sommer Student Center in Smith Hall reopened after an extensive renovation project that has reshaped the building into a modern hub of student activity. Changes include colorful new furniture and large-screen TVs (which came in handy during last night’s Super Bowl party!), a beautiful gas fireplace, lowered windows, new carpeting, a downstairs game room and office space for student life staff.

Here are what our students had to say about the new Sommer Center renovations, which were funded entirely by private donors:

✳️ “I like how we now have a place where we can study but can also be loud with our friends.” - Caitlin ’20

✳️ “The fireplace is my personal favorite -- it makes the space feel more homey.” - Whitney ’20

✳️ “I’m really glad to see that they put the time and effort to make it into a place where everyone can hang out and do a number of different things.” - Tanner ’20

✳️ “The Sommer Center provides a lot of opportunities academically and socially for students.” - Nikki ’22
