They got to stay overnight in the residence halls with current Wellsians, do hands-on classroom activities, and participate in campus events. Thank you to everyone in the Wells community who made our new admitted students feel at home!

Wells Around the World - Patience Koenig '22

Patience Koenig '22 traveled to upstate New York in 2018 to study Environmental Science and Sustainable Food Systems at Wells College. In the Wells community, Patience is part of the Chamber Orchestra and Jazz Band as well as the President's Advisory Committee on Diversity, Inclusion, and Intercultural Excellence.

PK Eco Storage, the business idea she talks about in this video, has garnered national attention. Patience was selected to represent the Africa regional Global Action and Impact Hub (GAIN) with this project and has won the Global Impact Challenge at the 25th United Nations Youth Assembly in New York.

Today's complex problems require innovative solutions—and Wellsians have it! We are so incredibly proud of Patience Koenig '22. After winning the Be Your Own Boss business idea competition at Wells, Patience has gone on to win the Global Impact Challenge at the United Nations 25th Youth Assembly.

In Patience's home country of Liberia, 80% of rural farmers' yield can go to waste due to poor travel conditions and lack of proper storage from farm to market. Her business project, PK Eco Storage, will provide solar-powered mobile food storage to help farmers store fruits and vegetables for transportation.

"I’m passionate about using this eco-friendly storage to reduce food waste and improve farmers' livelihood and income in Liberia," Patience said.

PK Eco Storage will now receive seed funding and valuable mentorship from the UN Youth Assembly. Research and fundraising will continue. We will be back later today with a video interview so you can hear from Patience herself about her project!

We might be biased, but we think today's #iheartwells week theme is the CUTEST! 🥰

These babies and "fur"babies are dressed up in their Wells best!

Some of these cuties are even named after Wells (the black and white cat's name is Oddwina!)

AND two of these "good boys" 🐶 are very helpful "assistant athletic trainers" for our student-athletes.

Post a pic of your Wells babies in the comments to be entered into today's prize drawing! 👣🐾

We had a really great turn out on Wednesday at the poster presentation in the Long Library Learning Commons! Everyone was very excited to share their experiences and internships from J-term and fall semester. There were a wide range of experiences from interning at medical centers and urgent cares to positions on our very own campus like in @_thegrindcafe and @wellsexpress athletics department. Great job, everyone!

********************

As you are likely aware, the entire Northeast U.S. is experiencing the beginning of a multi-phase winter storm. This morning brought a coat of ice to the Central New York region, with significant snowfall of 8 to 12 inches expected later today and tonight.

In Aurora, snow will be mixed with sleet and freezing rain until early evening, with the heaviest snow expected between 7 p.m. Sunday and 7 a.m. Monday. If you are traveling back to the area today, please use your best judgment. In some cases, it may be safer for you to wait out the storm where you are, rather than head into the storm’s path. The safety of our community members is our highest priority, and students who choose to delay returning to campus will not be penalized.

Buildings & Grounds staff have been working to treat campus roadways and pathways as quickly as possible, but please note that icy conditions are expected to remain an issue for the next 24 hours.

For students who have requested Wells College transportation shuttles from Ithaca, Rochester or Syracuse: if your travel plans have changed, please send an email to [email protected].

We will continue to monitor the storm throughout the evening and will send further updates as necessary. If you need assistance, please contact Campus Safety at 315.364.3229 or dial 911 in case of emergency.

This week for Woke Wednesday, students watched "Hello, Privilege. It's Me, Chelsea," a documentary about white privilege from comedian Chelsea Handler. After the film was over, students got the chance to discuss what they saw and how they felt.

The series, hosted each Wednesday evening, is hosted by the Office of Student Equity & Inclusion Initiatives. Previous topics have included toxic masculinity, LatinX/Hispanic culture, and the Confederados of Brazil.

While our students enjoy a much-deserved summer break, it has been anything but restful for our dining hall staff! This summer, Wells and Hallmark Management have commenced work on some eagerly-awaited (and much-needed) renovations to the College's dining hall in Main Building.

When students return next month, they’ll find new bathrooms by the entrance, a “breakfast nook” in the south wing, new flooring, brighter shades of paint in the north and south wings, and a much-improved dishwashing area. (Don’t worry, that beautiful woodwork and the stained glass windows will remain as they are!)

Fun fact: by the time renovations are complete, workers will have gone through 30 gallons of paint and over 65 gallons (!!) of spackle.

We thank Hallmark, which provides dining services to the College, for being such a valuable partner!

With over 100 learning centers located in 27 cities throughout China, we now staff a team of over 4000 professionals in ESL teaching, educational research and development, marketing and tutoring services. We are located in Beijing, Xi’an, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Kunming, Nanjing, Ningbo, Chengdu, Chongqing, Suzhou, Xiamen, Wuhan, etc. Students (Teen and Adult) While many educational centers teach children, We focuse on older students, such as teenagers (10-18) and adults (18+). For foreign teachers, that means not only is it easier for you to manage the classes, but it’s also a great opportunity to easily make local friends. Having local friends is the best way to be introduced to Chinese culture and way of life, and of course, they can help with any language barriers you might encounter. Location We are located in 27 different cities all over China including cities such as Beijing, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Xi’an, and Nanjing. With such diverse locations, candidates have the opportunity to be placed in a city that fits their preferences and personalities. With this similar school environment, you could even choose to experience a different city in China each year, and still have a familiar workplace. A yearly contract is also a perfect length of time to gain an understanding of different cultures between different cities. Classes The curriculum we use is designed and produced by National Geographic. Our “Core Program” includes all the regular classes. Classes can be 1 on 1, 1 on 4, or 1 on 10. In addition to the “Core Program” classes, there is also a special class called “I Show.” In the “I Show” class, our teachers are able to lecture about any topic they want. It is considered a little more of a casual class, that just encourages the students to practice English in a natural setting. If you, as the foreign teacher, are interested in movies, you can make the topic of the class about movies. If you studied in drama at your university, you can turn your class into an acting class that day. Rather than forcing teachers to strictly follow a curriculum, we encourage and give our teachers the freedom to be creative with their classes. Rewards and bonuses Our salary structure includes a housing allowance, quarterly bonus, contract renewal bonus, full-attendance bonus and demo class sign-up bonus. The car I bought in 2010 so I go to college at this place called Wells had some aging issues this weekend which ate into this morning, and I missed the employee breakfast. I heard there was bacon. I hope all the right people won and that we have bacon again next year. Thank you for the 5-year cup. Be Wells.
