Meet Meghan Ackley, an English Language Center instructor who has helped students learn English for 22 years!

Meghan teaches listening, speaking, reading, grammar, and pronunciation. She speaks four languages, has two master’s degrees, and has also taught in the Czech Republic.

For Meghan, learning English is about more than language skills. It is also about sharing ideas, learning from others, and building friendships. “By the end of the semester, it becomes a community where genuine friendships and support systems have formed,” she said.

This summer, English Language Center instructors welcomed teachers and university leaders from 國立臺灣師範大學 National Taiwan Normal University for two special programs. 🌎

Participants practiced English, learned new teaching ideas, visited classrooms, joined workshops, and created lessons they can use at home.

We are proud of our instructors for making the programs welcoming, useful, and fun!

“Don’t cut corners when studying for a test.” Cut corners means to skip important steps to save time, money, or effort. The phrase comes from the idea of taking a shortcut instead of going all the way around a corner. ✂️

For UT Austin student Liam Scott, Talk Time is a chance to connect with English Language Center (ELC) students while preparing for his own future as an English as a Second Language (ESL) educator.

Liam has volunteered with Talk Time since November 2025. Through the program, he gets to meet students from around the world, exchange cultural experiences, and learn more about different languages and perspectives.

For ELC students, Liam says Talk Time offers a welcoming place to practice English, learn about American culture, share their own stories, and make friends in Austin.

“It only made sense I also join in on an in-person conversation club to further my exposure to international English learners,” Liam said. 🌎
