Shovels ready 🏗️ 🎓 Yesterday we broke ground on a new building at the UT Education and Research Center at Laredo. Growth in students and programs has outpaced the current footprint — this new building adds classrooms, teaching labs and research space to grow South Texas’s health care workforce. Laredo is the only place in Texas where students can earn degrees from four separate UT institutions under one roof:

Algae have been found to have tremendous commercial applications, from pharmaceuticals to fuel to mining. More than half of the carbon dioxide removed naturally from the atmosphere is removed by algae. For 50 years, The University of Texas at Austin’s UTEX Culture Collection has kept 3,000 strains alive and available to researchers worldwide.

Prepping for Mars 🚀 🏃‍➡️ 🔴 UT Southwestern Medical Center researchers found that intense exercise during six months missions on the International Space Station kept astronauts' hearts strong enough to handle conditions similar to those experienced on a hypothetical mission to Mars.

Intense exercise during long spaceflights helps to maintain heart structure and function within a range needed to tolerate the low-gravity environment of Mars, a study co-led by a UT Southwestern Medical Center researcher suggests.

A noninvasive technology uses harmless magnetic fields to deliver drugs and soothe overactive nerves without opioids or surgery.

Researchers at the Children's Medical Center Research Institute at UT Southwestern Medical Center have identified a key driver of aggressive brain tumor growth. Published in Cell, the findings point toward a dietary intervention already in clinical use that could be tested in patients before surgery.
