Environmental Science Institute

ESI was founded by The University of Texas at Austin as a multi-disciplinary institute for basic scientific research in environmental studies.

The Environmental Science Institute serves as a focal point on campus for a wide scope of interdisciplinary research and teaching involving the complex interactions of the biosphere, hydrosphere, and lithosphere in the Earth system, as well as the human dimensions of these interactions. ESI coordinates cross-departmental environmental science instruction; facilitates education and outreach in scie

nce, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields; and disseminates advances in the area of environmental science that are important locally and globally.

Hot Science Cool Talks events feature hands-on interactive activities from a variety of different organizations in Austin followed by a Cool Talk by UT professors. This includes a prize raffle, Q&A period, and amazing pre-talk performances!

In Dr. Banner's Environmental Resilience Science class, students took to the field in East Austin to explore air quality and environmental resilience firsthand. Guided by policy experts and researchers, the class investigated the real-world politics and community impact of the fuel facility at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

The BRIDGES program brings UT researchers and Austin community members together to address local challenges in water and air quality, land use, and climate resilience that affect the health and well-being of Austin residents.

How can growing cities become more sustainable and resilient? A new publication in Environmental Research created through a collaboration among 18 researchers organized by UT’s ESI highlights four key ideas for building thriving urban futures:

🔹 Urban areas are interconnected with surrounding rural communities in complex systems.
🔹 Data and modeling can help guide sustainable decisions.
🔹 Creating sustainable urban-rural systems requires meaningful community partnerships.
🔹 Change depends on adaptive and transformative governance frameworks
